Parts 1, 2 and 3 are found here, here, and here. And this is finally the last post from the Great Ocean Road! We finished the tour on Tuesday that happened to be Valentine's day and as you can see someone made the effort of reminding everyone of it on the beach.

Osat 1, 2 ja 3 löytyy täältä, täältä ja täältä. Ja tämä on vihdoinkin se viimeinen Great Ocean Road postaus! Päätettiin meidän matka ystävänpäivänä, kuten voittekin kuvasta päätellä. Joku oli nähnyt vaivaa muistuttaakseen kaikkia kyseisestä tapahtumasta.

The last (or the first if you start from the Melbourne end) part called the Surf Coast of the Great Ocean Road was definitely the most scenic if you think what you can see by just driving without stopping, but otherwise it wasn't as impressive as for example the Shipwreck Coast. 

Viimeinen (tai ensimmäinen, jos aloitat Melbournen päästä) osa Great Ocean Roadista, nimeltään Surf Coast, oli ehdottomasti hienoin pätkä maisemiensa puolesta - jos siis puhutaan siitä, mitä autosta voi nähdä, eikä pysähdy erikseen näkemisen arvoisia paikkoja etsimään. Muuten se ei ollut yhtä vaikuttava, kuin esimerkiksi Shipwreck Coast.

We finished our journey to the lighthouse (that is known from a tv-series that I had never heard of before) and headed back to the city via highway. There's nothing much left to say about the attractions we saw but I'd say in general the Great Ocean Road was a good experience. Now I can say "been there, done that".

Me lopetettiin matkamme majakalle (joka oli kuulemma tuttu telkkarisarjasta, josta minä en ollut kuullut koskaan aiemmin) ja suuntasimme takaisin kaupunkiin valtatietä pitkin. Loppumatkan kohteista ei suuremmin ole sanottavaa jäljellä, mutta yleisesti ottaen Great Ocean road oli hyvä kokemus. Nyt voin ainakin sanoa olleeni siellä.

However the Great Ocean Road isn't the most spectacular thing I've seen in Australia. For example the coastline of Great Southern of WA is at least as impressive and I really enjoyed the nature (including some gorges and caves as well) in Tasmania at least as much as I enjoyed the Great Ocean Road.

Kuitenkaan Great Ocean Road ei nouse huikaisevimmaksi paikaksi, jonka olen Australiassa nähnyt. Esimerkiksi Great Southernin rantaviiva Länsi-Australiassa lyö vertoja tälle tien pätkälle ja nautin Tasmanian luonnosta (mukaanlukien muutamat rotkot ja luolat) vähintään yhtä paljon.

If you have months and money to travel around Australia I'd say go somewhere else and see something else.  There are many other wonderful places along the endless coasts of Australia and I'm pretty sure I've seen just a fraction. If you're an average tourist visiting Sydney and Melbourne for a couple of weeks the Great Ocean Road is definitely worth it. It's a cheapish and quick way to see what the ocean and the coast can be like and it was a good experience, can't deny that. It just probably can't beat some other places I've seen here. 

Jos sinulla on reilusti aikaa (=kuukausia) ja rahaakin kohtuudella, niin sanoisin, että mene ja näe jotakin muuta Australiassa. Täältä löytyy niin monta muutakin upeaa kohdetta loputtoman rantaviivan varrelta, enkä minäkään ole nähnyt niistä kuin minimaalisen osan. Jos taas olet keskiverto turisti visitoimassa Sydneyssä ja Melbournessa parin viikon ajan, niin Great Ocean Road on ehdottomasti ajamisen arvoinen. Se on halvahko ja nopea tapa nähdä miltä meri ja ranta voivat täällä näyttää, eikä sitä käy kieltäminen etteikö se olisi ollut hyvä kokemus. Great Ocean Road vain ei ehkä päihitä muutamia muita paikkoja, jotka olen täällä nähnyt.

But in the end the Great Ocean Road is one of the most famous roads in Australia and you kind of should see it. And I have seen it now.

Mutta onhan Great Ocean Road kuitenkin yksi kuuluisimmista teistä Australiassa ja se tavallaan pitäisi nähdä. Ja minä voin nyt sanoa sen nähneeni.

Time for the third Great Ocean Road post! You can find parts 1 and 2 from here and here. Anyway. Our trip continued on Tuesday morning and after seeing Twelve Apostles we headed to see more amazing spots on the way.

Olisi lienee aika kolmannelle Great Ocean Road postaukselle! Osat yksi ja kaksi voi lukea täältä ja täältä. Joka tapauksessa matkamme jatkui tiistaiaamuna Kahdeltatoista Apostolilta eteenpäin, kohti uusia huikaisevia kohteita.

One of them was called Razor Back and I have to say this stack of stone was my favourite. It was massive and impressive, standing there still while the waves were pounding on it. The ocean and the nature overall never stop amazing me. 

Yksi niistä oli kivi nimeltään Razor Back ja täytyy todeta, että se oli lempparini kaikista kivimuodostelmista, joita nähtiin. Se oli massiivinen ja vaikuttava seisoessaan paikoillaan aaltojen hakatessa sen kylkiin. Meri ja luonto yleensäkin ei lakkaa hämmästyttämästä minua.

The Loch Ard Gorge was the other one of our stops - it's named after a ship called Loch Ard that was travelling from England to Melbourne. However it never made it to it's destination and ended up to be one more shipwreck in the area. This part of the Great Ocean Road is actually called Shipwreck Coast due the huge amount of shipwrecks in these rough waters. 

Loch Ard Gorge taas oli toinen kohteistamme - kyseinen rotko (mikähän lie tässä tapauksessa olisi paras käännös sanalla "gorge") on nimetty Loch Ard-nimisen laivan mukaan, joka matkasi Englannista kohti Melbournea. Se ei koskaan kuitenkaan päässyt kohteeseensa asti, vaan päätyi yhdeksi uudeksi hylyksi meren pohjaan. Kyseinen pätkä Great Ocean Roadilla on itseasiassa vapaasti suomennettuna nimeltään Haaksirikkorannikko johtuen valtavasti määrästä haaksirikkoja, joita siellä on sattunut.

All the passengers of Loch Ard were killed except for the two survivors called Tom and Eva. They were lucky enough to find their way to one of the rare beaches between the steep cliffs and even find help from the nearby village. Again, the story in it's full length is a lot more interesting and thanks to our great tour guide and her storytelling skills she made us all live those struggles of the two survivors in our heads. Kaikki Loch Ardin matkustajat menettivät henkensä kahta selviytyjää, Tomia ja Evaa, lukuunottamatta. He olivat riittävän onnekkaita löytääkseen tiensä yhdelle harvoista rannoista keskellä jyrkkiä kallionseinämiä ja sieltä avun luokse läheiseen kylään. Taas kerran tarina koko komeudessaan olisi huomattavasti kiinnostavampi ja kiitos mahtavan oppaamme tarinankerrontataitojen me kaikki elimme täysillä mukana Tomin ja Evan kauhunhetkissä. And that's it for this time - I can just imagine what these waters would have looked liked in the stormy winter months. It's still summertime and I still wouldn't have gone for a swim! No question why the area has required so many lives when ships have gone under.

Ja siinäpä kaikki tällä kertaa - voin vain kuvitella, miltä nuo kyseiset vedet näyttävät myrskyisinä talvikuukausina. Tällä hetkellä ollaan vielä kesässä, enkä silti olisi mennyt uimaan! Ei kysettäkään siitä, miksi alue on vaatinut niin monia henkiä laivojen upotessa meren syleilyyn.

As you can see, this is the part two for this series of posts about The Great Ocean Road. This time I'll just share these photos from Twelve Apostles - the stone stacks that are probably even the most famous thing on this road. At least is the one spot I've seen lots of photos of and it's presented in all the vouchers advertising the road.

Kuten varmasti jo otsikosta näettekin on tämä postaus jatkoa edelliselle The Great Ocean Road postaukselle. Tällä kertaa ajattelin vain jakaa nämä kuvat Kahdeltatoista Apostolilta (Twelve Apostles). Kyseessä ovat siis varmaan tämän tienpätkän kuuluisimmat kivimuodostelmat. Tai ainakin minä olen nähnyt kasoittain kuvia kyseiseltä paikkaa ja se mainitaan jokaisessa lippulappusessa, joka tätä tietä mainostaa.

There's nothing much to say really. We saw the Apostles twice, fist time being in the evening on Monday but unfortunate for us the sunset wasn't the most amazing I've seen in Australia. However it was still quite beautiful and there's something that fascinates me about the ocean.

Minulla ei oikeastaan ole kovin paljon sanottavaa - nähtiin Apostolit kahdesti, ensimmäisen kerran ollessa maanantai-iltana. Valitettavasti auringonlasku ei ollut upein, jonka olen Australiassa nähnyt, mutta oli maisemat silti melko kauniit ja meressä nyt vaan on jotain maagista ja kiehtovaa.

The second stop in this place was in the morning on Tuesday - we were hoping for a nice, clear, and blue sky but ended up with clouds. Cloudy day is always a bit disappointing as the sea doesn't have a chance to show it's amazing shades of blue and turquoise but on the other hand it's more dramatic and powerful when it's cloudy. Grey, almost threatening, huge mass of water added to the massive formations of stone. Pretty cool I'd say.

Toinen pysähdys täällä tapahtui tiistaina aamupäivästä. Toiveissa oli kirkas ja pilvetön sinitaivas, mutta saatiin vain pilveä pilven perään. Pilvinen päivä on aina vähän pettymys, sillä meri ei pääse oikeuksiinsa kaikissa upeissa sinisen ja turkoosin säyissään. Toisaalta taas harmaa taivas loi dramaattisemman tunnelman meren ollessa harmaa, melkein uhkaava, valtaisa vesimassa, joka velloi kivipaasien ympärillä. Olihan se ihan hienon näköistä.

And that's pretty much it - again, I don't think Apostles were the best spot on the road, but something you should certainly see. It is quite an iconic landmark on this road!

Ja siinäpä se olikin sitten. En sanoisi Apostolien olevan tien huikaisevin osuus, mutta jotakin, joka pitäisi kyllä sinne lähtiessä tsekata. Onhan se nyt aika ikoninen maamerkki Great Ocean Roadilla!

Has anyone of you driven the Great Ocean Road? 

Onko kukaan teistä koskaan ollut Great Ocean Roadilla?

First of all I have to say I'm not in schedule with these posts. I'm writing this, sitting in Burnie, Tasmania, knowing that I have material for a few posts about Tassie already and I still want to publish these photos from The Great Ocean Road as well. But anyway, let's get started.

Ihan ensimmäiseksi täytyy sanoa, etten ole ihan aikataulussa näiden postausten kanssa. Kirjoitan tätä istuessani majapaikkamme sängyllä Burnie nimisessä pikkukaupungissa Tasmaniassa tietäen, että materiaalia löytyy muutamaan postaukseen jo Tasmaniankin osalta, mutta haluan myös julkaista nämä kuvat Great Ocean Roadilta. Yhdeltä Australian tunnetuimmista tienpätkistä. Mutta eiköhän aloiteta!

We headed to this famous drive early on one Monday morning, the 13th of February to be precise. Instead of driving ourselves we decided to go with a tour and I have to say I couldn't have been happier with the decision we made. I'm not a huge fan of tours, I was doubting whether or not it's going to be worth the money and if I'll even enjoy it. But I did. 

Me suunnattiin tien päälle aikaisin eräänä maanantaiaamuna, 13. helmikuuta ollakseni tarkka. Sen sijaan, että olisi ajettu itse, päädyttiin valitsemaan kiertoajelu. En ole tällaisten ryhmäturistimatkajuttujen suurin ystävä, mutta pakko se vaan on myöntää, etten olisi voinut olla tyytyväisempi tähän päätökseen. Reissu oli jokaisen pennin arvoinen ja nautin ihan täysin siemauksin epäilyksistä huolimatta.

Our tour was two days long and we booked it from Sightseeing Tours Australia (I think I have to mention this, as I was so positively surprised by the tour). On the day one we had a 3 hours drive all the way to the other end of the road via highway and then the fun part started. These pics are from places called Tower Hill and London Bridge. Tower Hill is a wildlife reserve where I saw koalas in wild for the very first time - they don't live in Western Australia but now I can finally tick that animal on my bucket list as well. Or I kind of ticked it months ago when I met one in a shopping centre in Bunbury but that's not quite the same thing.

Meidän kiertoajelu oli kahden päivän mittainen ja varattiin se Sightseeing Tours Australialta (pakko se on mainita, kun oltiin niin positiivisesti yllättyneitä). Eka päivä aloitettiin tylsähköllä kolmen tunnin ajomatkalla maantietä pitkin varsinaisen hauskan osuuden alkupäähän, jotta voitaisiin lopettaa seuraavana päivänä Melbournen päässä. Postauksen kuvat ovat paikoista nimeltä Tower Hill ja London Bridge, Tower Hillin ollessa jonkinmoinen luonnonsuojelualue. Näinkin siellä elämäni ekat luonnonvaraiset koalat - niitä kun ei Länsi-Australiasta löydä. Nyt voin kuitenkin yliviivata tämänkin eläimen "pakko nähdä" listaltani oikeasti, vaikka yhden kyseisen lajin yksilön tapasin jo Bunburyssa ostoskeskuksessa. Mutta ei se nyt kuitenkaan ollut ihan sama asia.

London Bridge then - it used to be a bridge back when it was named as it was connected to the mainland, but now it's more like an arch as the first arch was lost some years ago. The story about London Bridge literally falling down as the song goes was quite interesting as well. It used to be a place for people to visit and actually walk on it. On the day the huge piece of stone fell down there were tens of people up there but luckily no-one got hurt. I'm too lazy to write the whole story here as I bet it's somewhere on the internet anyway, but shortly said it came all up to one man who noticed something weird was going on and started getting the others off from the bridge.

London Bridge sen sijaan oli nimeämisensä aikoihin silta, joka oli yhteydessä rantaan. Nyt se on oikeastaan ennemminkin holvikaari, sillä sen toinen puolisko hajosi joitakin vuosia sitten. Tarina kyseisen tapahtuman takana oli sekin mielenkiintoinen. London Bridgen ollessa aikanaan oikea silta, oli ihmisillä tapana mennä katselemaan maisemia sen päältä. Eräänä päivänä ensimmäinen kaari kuitenkin hajosi, mutta kuin ihmeen kaupalla kukaan ei loukkaantunut. Olen liian laiska kertomaan tarinaa tässä kokonaisuudessaan ja se löytynee netin syövereistä, mutta lyhykäisyydessään yhden miehen ansiosta kaikki sillalla silloin olleet pelastuivat hänen huomatessaan, ettei kaikki ole niinkuin pitäisi ja alkaessaan hommata muitakin pois kivirakennelman päältä. 

Anyway. These two places were the first attractions we went to see and I have to say I quite enjoyed Tower Hill. London Bridge wasn't bad either, even though it wasn't probably the most spectacular rock formation of the whole Great Ocean Road.

Joka tapauksessa nämä kaksi paikkaa olivat ensimmäisiä kohteita, joissa pysähdyttiin. Täytynee todeta, että nautin Tower Hillistä melkoisesti, eikä London Bridgekään huono ollut. Se vain ei ehkä yltänyt ihan yhtä huikaisevalle tasolle, kuin jotkut muut kivimuodostelmat Great Ocean Roadin varrella.

First of all I have to say: we didn't spend enough time in Melbourne that I could say these are the "must see" things or that these would be my favourites after a longer time of exploring. But for now, these are the three things I wanted to share with you as I really liked these and they're all suitable for a smaller budget as well!

Ensimmäisenä on sanottava, että me ei vietetty riittävästi aikaa Melbournessa voidakseni sanoa, että nämä ovat "pakko nähdä" kohteet tai että nämä olisivat mun lempparikohteet pidempiaikaisen tutkimisen jälkeen. Mutta just nyt, nämä kolme asiaa tuntuivat jakamisen arvoisilta. Tykkäsin kaikista myös budjettiystävällisyytensä vuoksi!

1. Melbourne Museum

I love museums and I've been to a few and Melbourne Museum is one of my all time favourites. It's big but you can still see everything in one day - you need the whole day though plus snacks with you (if you can't afford eating in cafes...). There's everything from dinosaurs to Aboriginal history to evolution and to human mind, something to everyone I'd say. I don't know how many of the galleries are permanent and how many will change though. But the museum is well structured and interesting all the way from one end to another. Adult's ticket is $14.

Rakastan museoita ja olen käynytkin muutamassa, mutta Melbournen museo nousi yhdeksi suosikeistani. Se on iso, muttei liian suuri pala purtavaksi yhden päivän aikana. Tosin tarvitset kyllä koko päivän ja evästä mukaan (jos et siis voi kustantaa kahviloissa syömistä...). Museosta löytyy kaikenlaisia näyttelyitä dinosauruksista aboriginaalihistoriaan ja evoluutiosta ihmismieleen. En tosin tiedä kuinka moni näistä on pysyviä ja kuinka moni vaihtuu uuteen hetken päästä. Museo itsessään oli hyvin rakennettu ja mielenkiinto pysyi yllä alusta loppuun saakka. Aikuisen sisäänpääsy maksoi $14.

2. St. Paul's Cathedral

To be honest again - Australia isn't the place to be if you want to see amazing churches or old buildings in general. But as a person who loves churches this one with a very central location impressed me. Might be also something to do with the fact I've lived on this continent for a few months and got used to it's lack of old architecture. But anyway. Because of the central location walking out of this church gives you a nice view to Flinder's station, another pretty building.

Ollakseni taas rehellinen - Australia ei ole ideaali paikka huikeiden kirkkojen tai ylipäänsä vanhojen rakennusten metsästykselle. Mutta ihmiselle, joka rakastaa kirkkoja tämä aivan keskustassa sijaitseva kirkko oli ihan vaikuttava paikka. Sillä tosin voi olla jotain tekoa myös sen faktan kanssa, että olen asustanut tässä maanosassa muutaman kuukauden ja tottunut vanhan arkkitehtuurin puutteeseen. Mutta joka tapauksessa, keskeisen sijaintinsa vuoksi kirkon uloskäynti tarjoaa vierailijalle myös kivan näkymän rautatieasemalle nimeltä Flinder's Station - taas yksi sievä rakennus. 

3. State Library of Victoria

Also as a big book lover I love libraries but this place is much more than just a library. The building itself is pretty great and worth of seeing but it also has a collection of old books and art and all sorts of things. Kind of like a mini scale museum. A must see if you like books, history, or nice buildings. Or if you just want to sophisticate yourself.

Suurena kirjojen rakastajana rakastan myös kirjastoja, mutta tämä paikka on paljon muutakin, kuin vain kirjasto. Rakennus itsessään on hieno ja näkemisen arvoinen, mutta sieltä löytyy myös kokoelma vanhoja kirjoja, taidetta ja kaikenmoista muuta nähtävää. Tavallaan miniversio museosta. "Pakko nähdä" -kohde, jos pidät kirjoista, historiasta tai kivoista rakennuksista. Tai jos tahdot muuten vaan sivistää itseäsi.

All these three things are on the free tram zone, so you don't even have to pay to get to them. And as I really liked a couple of other things as well I'll mention them quickly: 

Jokainen näistä kolmesta paikasta on ilmaisella ratikka-alueella, joten niihin kulkemisesta ei tarvitse edes maksaa. Ja koska tykkäsin parista muustakin jutusta tosi paljon, on ne nostettava tässä nyt pikaisesti esille:

Queen Victoria Market

I love markets and this one is a huge one. Atmosphere, lots to choose from and if you happen to have money (unlike me) you might find something nice to take home! 

Rakastan markkinoita ja tämä on iso juttu, Tunnelma, paljon valinnan varaa jos sulta (toisin kuin multa) löytyy taskusta ylimääräistä rahaa pienelle matkamuistoshoppailulle.

Southbank

Besides having Eureka Tower and Skydeck there (which should be on this list to be honest) the atmosphere, again, was great. Definitely a place to go for a little relaxed walk on a weekend night.

Eureka Towerin ja Skydeckin lisäksi (jonka pitäisi olla ehdottomasti tällä listalla) tämänkin paikan tunnelma oli tosi kiva. Ehdottomasti mukava kohde rennolle iltakävelylle viikonloppuiltana.

So to conclude, I've pretty much loved everything here. I could probably say I like Melbourne a lot!

Kaiken kaikkiaan voisinkin siis todeta, että olen tykästynyt lähes kaikkeen täällä. Ehkäpä olisikin aika todeta, että tykkään Melbournesta tosi paljon!

Eureka Tower used to be the world's tallest residential skyscraper back in the day when it was built and it still is pretty impressive even though it has lost it's status. Eureka Tower rises above all the other buildings in Melbourne and part of it called Eureka Skydeck is open for anyone to take a look at the spectacular views. 

Kun Eureka Tower rakennettiin, oli se maailman korkein asumiseen tarkoitettu pilvenpiirtäjä. Se on edelleen varsin vaikuttava rakennus, vaikka onkin jo menettänyt kyseisen statuksensa. Eureka Tower kohoaa kaikkien muiden Melbournen rakennusten yläpuolelle ja osa siitä, Eureka Skydeck, on avoinna yleisölle, jos haluaa katselemaan näitä huikeita maisemia.

We headed there on Saturday and it was our "nice, expensive thing to do on Viktoria's birthday". The normal price to get up there is $20 for an adult but we paid a reduced price of $17 by showing our vouchers we got from our hostel. Doesn't sound as bad as $20 but I'm still going way over my budget with my travels so far... Anyway. If you desire to go and take a look at the views from the 88th floor of this building, you should keep your eyes open. Besides this 15% off voucher we saw at least one other valid offer so you probably shouldn't pay the full price.

Suuntasimme sinne lauantaina Skydeckin ollessa meidän "kiva, kallis juttu Viktorian synttäreiden kunniaksi". Normaali aikuisen lippu kustantaa 20 dollaria, mutta me maksettiin vain $17 näyttämällä alennuskuponkiamme. $17 ei kuulosta lainkaan niin pahalta kuin $20, mutta olen silti tällä hetkellä totaalisesti yli budjettini... Jokatapauksessa. Jos mieli tekee katselemaan maisemia 88. kerroksesta kannattaa pitää silmät auki. -15% tarjouskupongin, jonka saimme hostellilta, lisäksi näimme ainakin yhden toisen ajankohtaisen tarjouksen, joten täyttä hintaa ei kannata alkaa maksamaan.

The lift took 38 seconds to get up from the ground level and the views were breathtaking. I won't bother describing them, you can see the photos. For me the experience was even more exciting because of the adrenaline rush I always get in high places - I have to admit I'm a bit afraid of heights but in this place it wasn't an overwhelming feeling, more like excitement.

Hissimatka maanpinnan tasalta yläilmoihin kesti 38 sekuntia ja maisemat olivat henkeäsalpaavat. En vaivaudu kuvailemaan niitä, kuvat ovat sitä varten. Minulle kokemus oli myös hitusta jännittävämpi adrenaliinin iskiessä - täytyy myöntää, että pelkään korkeita paikkoja. Mutta tässä paikassa korkeanpaikankammo ei ollut ylitsepääseätön, ennemminkin vain pieni lisämauste innostukseen.

We spent over an hour wondering around the floor and admiring the views. I'd say it was a good thing to do - we saw the views in the daylight, enjoyed the (not most greatest) sunset and watched the city light up when the darkness comes. Amazing.

Me vietettiin yli tunti kuljeskelemalla ympäriinsä ja ihailemalla maisemia. Sanoisin, että tehtiin fiksu päätös tulla paikalla valoisan aikaan, nauttia (ei niin huikaisevasta) auringonlaskusta ja katsella kaupungin syttymistä tuhansiin valoihin pimeän laskeutuessa. Yksinkertaisesti huikeaa.

I highly recommend this if you're in Melbourne and happen to have a few extra dollars in your pocket to be spent. The walk from Eureka Skydeck back to the tram was also nice. Southbank seemed to be a lively, lovely area full of music, street artists, and restaurants to sit in and enjoy your life. One day I'll be rich enough to afford a glass of wine every now and then on my travels!

Suosittelen ehdottomasti tuhlaamaan muutaman dollarin tähän nähtävyyteen, jos olet Melbournessa. Kävelymatka Eureka Skydeckiltä takaisin ratikalle oli myöskin kiva, Southbankin alue vaikutti eloisalta - tosi kiva alue täynnä musiikkia, katutaiteilijoita, ja ravintoloita, joissa istua ja nauttia elämästä. Jonain päivänä olen riittävän rikas kustantaakseni lasillisen viiniä siellä ja täällä matkustaessani!

We've spent a couple of days in Melbourne now. Lots of walking and travelling on a free tram zone, sightseeing a bit and trying to stick in our budgets. No coffee in a cafe or taking an easy but expensive bus straight from the airport to wherever you're staying in the city - instead of that we found ourselves in a local bus and in a packed train with our over sized luggages. Oh well.

Parisen päivää Melbournessa on nyt takana. Paljon kävelemistä ja liikkumista ilmaisella ratikalla. Vähän nähtävyyksien katselua ja budjetissapysymisyrityksiä. Ei kahvia kahviloissa tai helppoa, mutta kallista bussia lentokentältä suoraan majoituksen luo keskustassa. Sen sijaan löydettiin itsemme ja liian painavat kantamuksemme paikallisbussista ja täyteen ahdestusta junasta.

So far I like this place. It has this certain feeling, a mixture of a small town and a big city. With over 4 million residents Melbourne is a big city on Australian (or on quite many other, too) scale and you can certainly see it. It's busy, public transportation is always full, and the buildings are high. A modern, businesslike feeling.

Tähän mennessä olen tykännyt tästä paikasta ja sen tietystä sekoituksesta pienen kaupungin ja ison metropolin tunnelmaa. 4 miljoonaa asukasta tekee Melbournesta Australian (ja oikeastaan melekein minkä tahansa muunkin) mittakaavalla ison kaupungin ja sen näkee. Täällä on kiireistä ja julkiset ovat aina täynnä, rakennukset ovat korkeita ja tunnelma moderni.

But Melbourne also has some charm that for example Perth doesn't. I think pretty much everyone knows these alleys covered in graffiti, right? Well, it was what I expected Melbourne to look like and now we've seen it. And I kind of liked it. Besides vibrant street art, relaxed and artistic atmosphere, Melbourne has bunch of quite impressive old buildings. Of course we're not talking about old buildings on Germany's or UK's scale, but on Australian scale.

Mutta Melbournessa on tiettyä viehätystä, jota esimerkiksi Perthistä en löytänyt. Kaikkihan tietävät ne graffiteilla koristellut kujat täällä, eikö? No, se oli minun oikeastaan ainoa ennakko-oletukseni tästä paikasta ja nyt olen ne nähnyt ja aikalailla tykästyinkin. Värikkään katutaiteen, rennon ja kevyesti hipsterin ilmapiirin lisäksi Melbournesta löytyy kourallinen melko vaikuttavia vanhoja rakennuksia. Tietenkään ei ole kyse vanhoista rakennuksista esimerkiksi Saksan tai Britannian mittakaavalla, mutta Australian kylläkin.

A 100 years old building in this country is quite a rare sight, but I've always liked the old buildings. They have soul. And Melbourne has an old but modern soul - at least judged by what I've seen so far. And I still have to say it's green. I got so used to the dryness of WA around this time of the year that all the green amazes me. But I have to say the greenness brings another thing that's not so pleasant: it's hot but also a bit humid. Back in West it was just hot.

Satavuotias rakennus on tässä maassa melkoinen harvinaisuus, mutta minä olen aina tykännyt sellaisista. Niillä on sielu. Ja Melbournen sielu on vanha, mutta moderni - ainakin sen perusteella, mitä ole ehtinyt näkemään. Ja vihreää täällä on edelleen. Länsi-Australia on varsin kuiva tähän aikaan vuodesta, joten tämä kaikki vehreys hämmästyttää. Mutta täytyy todeta myös, että siinä missä Länsi-Australiassa oli vain kuuma, on täällä kuuma, mutta myös vähän kostea ilma. Enkä oikein tykkää siitä.

But anyway. So far so good and I'm looking forward to the next days in this city. Our hostel is alright and in a good spot, the only roommate of ours I've spoken to so far seems to be nice. I think I'll enjoy it here.

Jokat tapauksessa, tähän asti kaikki on hyvin ja odotan innolla seuraavia päiviä tässä kaupungissa. Hostelli on okei ja hyvällä kohtaa, huonekavereista se ainoa, jonka kanssa muutaman sanan olen ehtinyt vaihtamaan, vaikutti mukavalta. Luulenpa, että tulen nauttimaan tästä pysähdyspaikasta.
