Sorry, Sydney, but I didn't like you

Sydney, the city everyone wants to see on their journey to Australia. I wanted to see it as well and found myself there in the beginning of March. Unlikely so many others I didn't like it. Sydney left me a bit cold. I didn't find any sort of connection with the place and apart from the great Saturday night in Mardi Gras 2017 and the lovely people who accommodated us, I didn't find too many things to get excited about.

Sydney on kaupunki, jossa jokainen tahtoo pysähtyä Australian reissullaan.
The Opera house was a disappointment - the thing I've known about Australia ever since I was a kid. This spectacular landmark was greater in my daydreams than in real life. The Harbor Bridge was a lot better, the views are worth the walk. A ferry to Manly and a walk there was nice but that's pretty much it.

Sydney certainly is a big city and I'm happy I can say I've been there and seen it, but I wouldn't go again. It wasn't anything special for me and I'd rather opt for Melbourne if I had to choose between those two. It's not completely horrible, there are friendly people, lots of places to eat out, and some nice spots, but it wasn't a city for me.

Have you ever went to a city with high expectations and been disappointed?
Oletko koskaan mennyt kaupunkiin suurin odotuksin ja pettynyt pahemman kerran?

Sydney Mardi Gras 2017

I'm in Finland now, in Lapland to be more precise, right now. My grandfather's funeral, visiting my grandma, and seeing other relatives. That's pretty much my weekend summed up. But this time I'm not going to talk about that but take a look back to beginning of March and Sydney.

Olen parhaillaan Suomessa, tarkemmin ottaen Lapissa.
A huge LGBT festival called Sydney Mardi Gras took place on out first weekend in Sydney and we decided to go and watch. I've never attended to anything like that before and I have to say it was a great experience. So many people and so much love. The atmosphere was something you can't really even describe and it was a lot of fun.

And it was one of those events that actually makes you think how unfair and horrible our world is as we still need something like this. It's sad that there are so many people who can't be themselves or if they're they'll get judged. Not even mentioning how many places still consider homosexuality a disease and/or illegal. I'm happy we finally legalized the same sex marriage in Finland this year, it was about the time.

But anyway. I think the photos tell the story better than my words! Say yes to love. And take part to the next Sydney Mardi Gras if you happen to be there in March.

Kuvat kertonevat kuitenkin enemmän kuin sanat. Sano kyllä rakkaudelle ja jos satut Sydneyhin seuraavan Mardi Grasin aikaan suosittelen ehdottomasti osallistumaan!
