Fremantle Markets, Freo, Western Australia

Over a month after these pics were taken I decided it would be a perfect time to publish these last photos from Fremantle. If you like markets, go to the ones in Freo. They're on every Friday 9am-8pm and every Saturday and Sunday 9am-6pm. The visit was worth it and I even found a couple of the Christmas presents and bought matching bracelets with my sister.

By the way - I'm super busy at the moment, don't judge me even though this post wasn't the longest or the best one in my blogs history, just felt like publishing even something today!

4am knows all of my secrets

Finnish translation in the end / Suomennos postauksen lopussa
You know you're an adult when you sit in the dinner table for five hours, you know you're and adult when you drink a glass of white wine and say yes to a gin and tonic followed by a discussion on kids' development and you open your laptop to read an article about Trump getting elected which makes you google all about Brexit and question your choices of studying abroad

And you meet a girl who's from the town next to your hometown back in Finland and you realize it's the end of November and you should buy Christmas presents and you go out and have a drink and walk on the beach looking at the sunset and wonder what happened, when did my friends started getting babies and the people I meet got all so grownup that they actually have real jobs and careers
Then you find two dollars in your handbag and scratch the car again and end up buying two pairs of sunglasses just in case you happen to keep breaking them once every two months and you realize you're an adult when you just say "yes it was a huge bump" to a kid who smiles on the backseat shouting "a big bump!" instead of screaming and crying when the car hits the pillar and you think you'll never try to park again because you can't afford it

And then you decide you need to make more money and try and find extra job for every Friday night and you know you're an adult because you're not out and about but crash in your bed after a 12h working day
Then you're driving on the highway, looking at the stars and thinking how bloody lucky you're in the end and smiling at yourself when you're singing badly along the bad pop song you've heard way too many times on radio and then you realize you've been living in Australia for almost four months and you're still happy, happier than you've been for a long long time

And then you pick up your phone and let the random thoughts flow from your brain all the way to your fingertips and to the paper that's not actually a paper but the screen of your phone you call a paper because you want to sound cool with your worn-out cliches
You do it all just to jump when your cousin rings to you and you say "Hi, how are you? I'm all good thanks" and you say "thanks and see you" every single time you leave a shop even though you know it's likely you'll never see the cashier again and you know you're an adult when you actually love the liquor truffle chocolates you got from South-Africa

And then the kid says "this is my Fiia" and the another one gives you a big cuddle and you just melt and realize they're going to be adults one day and you're going to miss them so so much.

A few very random thoughts in the middle of the night and incidents from the past weeks, a couple of photos from the last weekend in Perth. Nothing more to say this time.

Fremantle Prison YHA

I usually don't write about where I've been staying on my travels as I usually crash on someones couch or extra bedroom and save some money. But every now and then I stay in hostel or a hotel and every now and then I happen to end up in a great place. This happened when I went to visit Fremantle and Rottnest with my sister.

Fremantle was a great place and the location of this hostel called Fremantle Prison YHA was perfect for exploring what the town has to offer. This youth hostel is just a couple of years old and it locates in the Fremantle Prison. The prison itself is interesting and the side of it that has been renovated for the travellers used to be the female prison.

This being the case the hostel has a fascinating history of which you can read about from the posters on the walls, or you can take a free guided tour around. Besides being historically interesting the hostel was comfortable, clean, and had great cooking facilities plus loads of board games in a couple of different common areas.

The atmosphere was good, pretty much everyone said hello, and it felt like a really safe place to stay. Regardless of being a youth hostel the age range was huge and you couldn't say the place was only for people under 30.

So all in all - if you need accommodation in Fremantle or are planning to visit Rottnest but would like to save some money instead of paying a lot of the room on the island, this is a great option!

Fremantle, Western Australia

Fremantle is a small city just next to Perth. It's one of the first settlements around here from the beginning of 19th century. There's plenty of information of the city and its history on the internet if you're interested in - I'm a bit too lazy to start writing stuff on my own words this time.

Fremantle on pieni kaupunki aivan Perthin vieressä.
Fremantle prison was one of the most interesting places there and I'll write more about it later on. Even though we just relaxed and didn't really visit that many places while we were there (except Fremantle markets, again something I'll post about at some point) I still kind of found this certain connection with this place.

Yksi kiinnostavimmista paikoista Fremantlessa on sen vankila, josta tulen kirjoittelemaan myöhemmin. Vaikka me käytettiinkin paljon aikaa rentoutumiseen eri kohteiden tutkimisen sijaan (lukuunottamatta Fremantlen markkinoita, joista niistäkin on postaus tulossa) löysin silti tämän paikan kanssa tietynlaisen yhteyden.
Fremantle, or Freo, as everyone says here, had this certain atmosphere. A mixture of old charm and modern day art and feeling, a bit like a hippie place next to the ocean. I can't really name just one reason behind my liking for this city, but something there certainly is. Somehow it reminded me of the English towns I've visited - maybe the ones on the coast I used to love when I was a kid and I still want to visit whenever I have a chance. It doesn't look anything like an English town or village to me though, but this feeling doesn't come from anything physical I guess.

Fremantle, tai Freo, kuten kaikki täällä sanoo, omaa sellaisen tietyn tunnelman. Sekoitus vanhaa viehätystä ja modernia taidetta ja tunnelmaa, hieman hippifiilistä meren rannalla. En oikein osaa nimetä yhtä syytä sille, miksi paikkaan tykästyin, mutta jotain siinä on. Jotenkin mieleen tuli englantilaiset pikkukaupungit, joissa olen käynyt.
Whatever it was that I loved about Freo it did a good job convincing me that this place is worth of visiting. I love Perth in a way and even like my hometown Bunbury a lot, but I haven't found this special feeling with them. I don't know why but for me all the cities and towns have their own soul and sometimes you just find a great match and sometimes you're left a bit cold. Fiia and Freo were a good match and I guess there's no need for further explanations.

One tip I want to give to you is to check out Fremantle Arts Centre and what they have to offer. We spent Sunday afternoon sitting in the sun, listening to live music, watching people dancing and being happy, enjoying ourselves. I remember sitting there next to my sister and saying this is Australia, this is me, and this is my life. A simple, happy moment to remember. And it was all for free, something someone travelling on budget appreciates.

P.s. I started marking down how many times I needed a dictionary to write the Finnish translation somewhere half way through the text and the number is way too high to be even published. Seems like this is one of the days when I just can't handle my mother tongue.

P.s. Aloin merkkaamaan ylös kuinka monesti tarvitsin sanakirjaa kirjoittaakseni suomenkielisen käännöksen kun olin jossain puolivälissä tekstiä. Numero on ihan liian iso julkaistavaksi asti.

Father's day feelings

On Sunday we celebrated the Finnish Father's day. Or I did. Or I didn't. Whichever you prefer. We had Father's day here in Australia a couple of months ago, my host kids did something little for their father and of course the little one was born a couple of days before the day - can't imagine a better present for anyone, can you?

Sunnuntaina vietettiin suomalaista isänpäivää. Tai minä vietin. Tai en viettänyt. Miten vaan sen haluaa sanoa. Täällä Australiassa isänpäivä oli jo pari kuukautta sitten, host lapset antoivat isälleen jotain pientä ja tietenkin meidän pienimmäinen syntyi pari päivää ennen isänpäivää. Ei kai kukaan voi parempaa isänpäivälahjaa kuvitellakaan?
I sent some postcards to Europe and put a Father's day card to my father in the same envelope with the postcard for my family. I thought it was hilarious - it said something like "you're lucky to have me, where would you put all your money otherwise?" Don't know if my dad found it funny but at least there was a hint of truth behind it. So I could say I kind of celebrated the Australian Father's day but on the other hand I didn't.

On Sunday I had a skype chat with my family, it was lovely and something a bit more special. I used to skype with someone every week for the first two months - with my sister, my whole family, with my auntie, my cousin, my best friends, someone. Then my sister came here and we had one chat with our aunt and that's it, I didn't think about chatting with anyone as I had her here. But now I realized I haven't been talking with my parents for a month - I send messages to my mum in whatsapp regularly, something small almost every day, but it's not same as seeing them and hearing them. I know my dad reads some of the messages, my mum tells him how I'm doing, he sees the pictures and can read my blog (hi dad!). I hear from my mum how he's doing, but we don't really send messages as SMSs are expensive. So this was special.

So you could say I kind of celebrated the Finnish Father's day. But I didn't. I wasn't there to eat the cake or give a present or even a card. Somehow it's a bit sad but I guess it's life, the life I've chosen. I will miss birthdays and Father's days and Mother's days and all the other things, even Christmas this year. But even if it's a bit weird, a bit sad maybe, it's okay. I'm happy here, they're happy there, and no distance is too far for saying I love you. And I have the best dad ever, I love you ♥

P.s. The story behind these pictures: Monday evening. The super moon that wasn't that spectacular. Good friends. German Christmas bickies. +30 degrees. What else you need in life?

P.s. Tarina kuvien takana: Maanantai-ilta. Superkuu, joka ei ollutkaan ihan niin mahtava. Hyvät ystävät. Saksalaiset joulukeksit. +30 astetta lämmintä. Mitä muuta elämässä tarvitsee?

Quokkas of Rottnest

Last time I told you about our trip to Rottnest. This time I'm just going to share a couple of photos and a piece of information stolen from wikipedia. Here you go!

Viimeksi kirjoittelin matkastamme Rottnestille.
"The quokka (/ˈkwɒkə/, Setonix brachyurus), the only member of the genus Setonix, is a small macropod about the size of a domestic cat. Like other marsupials in the macropod family (such as kangaroos and wallabies), the quokka is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal."

"Lyhythäntäkenguru eli quokka, joskus myös kääpiövallabi (Setonix brachyurus) on sukunsa Setonix ainoa laji. Se on noin kotikissan kokoinen pussieläin. Se on kasvinsyöjä ja pääasiallisesti yöeläin. Lyhythäntäkengurun toinen nimitys quokka on johdettu noongarin kielen sanasta, joka on oletettavasti ollut gwaga."
Quokkas are everywhere in Rottnest. You're not supposed to feed them, but according to their behavior they know there's always going to be someone who gives them food. You will certainly see quokkas on your trip to the island as they're quite used to people. And they're pretty special little beings - there's just a few spots in WA with a quokka population.

Quokkia on ympäri Rottnestia.
And they're adorable, aren't they?
Ja onhan ne nyt söpöjä eikö vaan?

Wonders of WA: Rottnest

Rottnest is a small island close to Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The island is a popular holiday destination along the locals but I would recommend it to anyone visiting WA. It's easily accessible by ferries that leave from four different locations: Perth City, North Fremantle, Fremantle, and Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Rottnest on pieni saari lähellä Perthiä Länsi-Australiassa.
The best way to discover the island, in my opinion, is by bike. Hiring a bike isn't too expensive and if you are relatively fit you can easily ride the whole 20km long route along the coastline. We took a bit shorter way, a bit over 10km with my sister and saw a lot. We would have had time to take the longest way, but we didn't have enough food with us.

Omasta mielestäni paras tapa tutustua saareen on pyöräileminen.
This being the case my tip for anyone is to take a lots of snacks with you. There are general store, and restaurant on the island, but they're all in the same spot. There's pretty much nothing on the way so you just have to survive with what you have. And don't forget to bring water!

It's a bit hard to say what was my favourite thing in Rottnest as the whole island was just absolutely beautiful. Its nature is quite different to the nature we have here in Southwest and it's a great feeling to be surrounded by the ocean. I imagine there would be more people on the peak season, but we got to do our trip around the island pretty much on our own. A couple of other people riding their bikes and a tour bus passing us once and that's it. It's calming.

To give you a couple of concrete tips:
Pari konkreettista vinkkiä antaakseni:

1) Hire a bike. It takes you everywhere and you can enjoy the nature more than you would in a tour bus. And it's cheap.

2) Bring lots of water and food. You'll need both.
/ Ota mukaan paljon vettä ja ruokaa. Tulet tarvitsemaan molempia.
3) Remember that the sun can burn even if it's cloudy - don't forget your sunscreen. (Says the one who told her sister "the sun is the worst around this time of the day, it burns even if it's not sunny like today" and didn't put sunscreen on and burned her arms a bit.)
4) You don't need more than a day to discover the whole island. If you want to relax and enjoy the beaches more, then maybe two or three days would be nice, but otherwise a day is all you need.
5) Bring cash. My Australian card was working, but my sister's didn't. She had the same problem on our road trip (of which I'll tell you more later on!), so it seems to be that European cards won't necessarily work in the smallest towns.
/ Ota käteistä matkaan. Minun aussipankkikortti toimi, mutta siskon kortti ei. Hänellä oli sama ongelma roadtripillämme (josta kerron lisää myöhemmin!), joten vaikuttaa siltä, että eurooppalaiset kortit eivät välttämättä pelitä pienimmissä paikoissa.
And because I had so many photos from Rottnest I decided to save a couple of them for the next time - don't miss it, it's about to be something so adorable!
