London Court, Perth, Western Australia + this and that

As I told in the last post, I've found a few favourite spots in Perth even though I haven't been spending too much time in that particular city. One of them is a shopping arcade called London Court that locates right in the middle of the city centre. It's, as it's name tells, a court that could be in London. What I've heard it's one of the touristy things you should see in Perth and the two times I've walked there it's been pretty crowded.

And to give you some facts we could cite wikipedia: "London Court was built in 1937 by wealthy gold financier and businessman, Claude de Bernales for residential and commercial purposes." I guess it's just another way of making people feel like home - many of the people who came to Australia in the early days were British.

The effect of the Britain and British culture and people can be seen here and there, many of the roads and towns are named after their European examples - we have a Waterloo road pretty close to our home and there's another Perth in Scotland. But anyway, the reason I like London Court is simple, it makes me feel like home. Most of you must know that I've visited England several times in my life and I've left a big piece of my heart on that island. In London Court you can easily imagine yourself some 14 000km away from here.

It's kind of the same feeling as I get when I'm buying Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolates. I feel like I'm in England and right now it almost equals my "home home". (I still don't know how should I call Finland - it's home, but I have a home here as well. If I speak about Finland/Europe as home, it kind of feels like I don't recognize Australia as home which isn't true.)

But anyway, it's a nice little spot to visit in Perth. And as this post is a bit scrappy anyway, I could also add that I've been in Australia for exactly 3 months today. It's crazy. It feels like I came here yesterday but also like I've been always living here. Time is a fascinating thing and I keep telling that to you every time I post. Now I'm gonna go to bed as tomorrow morning we head to Margaret River with my sister and a few friends!

Kings Park, Perth, Western Australia

I finally had some time to sit down on my laptop without being too tired or too overwhelmed by the amount of material I should go through and put in order. I have over 700 pictures from the last week - more than 20 posts in mind I could write. So maybe we just start from the beginning and jump all the way to Saturday 15th of October. My sister arrived here on Friday and the next day we spend exploring Perth, the capital of Western Australia.

I like Perth, it's big and spread in a wide area, but it's not huge. It's big enough to have the feeling of a big city but it's still somehow cozy. I have to admit that this visit was just my second one, so I have no great knowledge of all the little secrets this place surely has, but I thought I could share my favourite spots so far.

Today's spot is the Kings Park - one of the biggest parks there are in cities around the world. It's actually an enormous green area right next to the CBD. You can easily spend there a day walking around, or if you have a car, you can drive around. I totally understand why we saw so many local people there, coming for a lunch or playing with their kids after school.

One of the best things about Kings Park are the spectacular views down to the city - I couldn't quite capture the feeling you get up there, but trust me: it's amazing and worth the steep walk we took to get there. If the views are not enough to pursue you to visit there while you're in Perth, you can always think about the Botanic Gardens showing the vegetation of different areas of WA or the mini treetop walk you can take there. Or maybe you want to visit the Aboriginal Art Gallery or maybe you want to take your kids to the playground as we did the other day?

Kings Park is a great place in any case - might be I just loved it because I love parks overall. Somehow it's always lovely to have a place to relax in the middle of a city and even though it's pretty quiet and you're surrounded by nature you're never alone. I love to watch people and a park is a great place for that.

Kings Park on joka tapauksessa mahtava paikka - ehkä osittain siksi, että rakastan puistoja ylipäänsä. Jotenkin minusta on aivan ihanaa löytää paikka rentoutumiselle keskellä kaupunkia ja vaikka luonnon keskellä onkin melko hiljaista, et ole koskaan täysin yksin. Rakastan katsella ihmisiä ja puisto on siihen täydellinen paikka.
I don't know if Kings Park is my favourite park, I quite enjoyed the ones I've visited in London and Munich, too. (Didn't like the one in Brussels though.) But Kings Park is lovely - just look at the pictures!

En tiedä, onko Kings Park lempipuistoni, sillä olen rakastunut myös niihin, joissa olen Lontoossa ja Münchenissä vieraillut. (Brysselin puistoon en sen sijaan ihastunut.) Mutta Kings Park on ihana - katsokaa vaikka noita kuvia!

Happiness is rye bread

Just a quick hello - my sister arrived here last Friday. I picked her up from the airport, we spent a couple of days in Perth, travelled to Fremantle and Rottnest and now we're back home in the south. The weekend we're about to spend on road and camping even though there's been million things happening and going upside down what comes to our plans. But we'll do something anyway!

And I think a photo tells more than thousand words. This is called happiness. Two things I miss from Finland: a proper rye bread and proper gum (these guys here don't really have xylitol in their gums). And chocolate + a few other things. I'm in heaven. And there was a paper bag I'm not allowed to open before Christmas - I think I'm going to get more Finnish things in a couple of months!

Mutta jotakin me tehdää enivei!

Tätä on onnellisuus. Olen taivaassa. Ja sain mä myös paperipussin, jota en saa ennen jolua avata - luulenpa, että saan jotain kivoja suomijuttuja taas parin kuukauden päästä!

Wonders of WA: Crooked Brook forest

Bush walking is something Australians do, or at least I believe so. It's something I did on the very first weekend I spent here and the place this post is about is actually the place where we went on that day. It's called Crooked Brook forest and it's located in the Ferguson Valley - the very same place where Gnomesville is.

"Bushwalking" eli "puskakävely", on jotakin, jota australialaiset harrastaa.
Crooked Brook forest has a few walking trails, the shortest being just 0,6km and accessible by wheelchair as well.  On the day these pictures were taken we went for a 1,5km walk with my friends Natalie and Minea and I got to practice my great Swedish with mina tjejer (Eng. "my girls"). Not that I would actually be able to speak Swedish but anyway.

I don't know if Crooked Brook is that extraordinary, it just is an Australian forest (or bush or whatever) but it's pretty nice in my opinion. The drive there includes some narrow gravel roads which are an experience on their own already and it's an area that is actually taken care of. And I kind of like doing stuff like that every now and then.

So if you happen to be in the Southwest of Western Australia and want to discover the Ferguson Valley, Crooked Brook forest could be one stop. It's great to get somewhere that is pretty much nowhere (and I ensure you there are many that kind of places in this huge country) every once in a while. And I just love how different the nature is compared to what I'm used to!

Bilingualism - being awkward in two languages?

Couldn't come up with as great term in English as I did in Finnish. That's my problem. I feel like I'm hanging somewhere between two languages. I've always thought I'm good with languages, I love writing and reading, and I've always been good in Finnish and in English at school. It's still true in a way. But somehow I feel like I'm incapable of producing anything smart in any language. I feel a bit incomplete.

Kielipuoli. Olo on vähän vajavainen.

I've always loved Finnish. I love reading pretty much anything - I've learned to love poems and even plays. I love writing in Finnish, I'm able impress myself in so many ways. I love listening to Finnish music. I love the language, it's just so complicated and challenging and somehow fascinating.

Olen aina rakastanut suomea. Rakastan lukea melkein mitä vaan - olen oppinut rakastamaan jopa runoja ja näytelmiä viime vuosien aikana. Rakastan kirjoittaa suomeksi, sillä pystyn ilmaisemaan itseäni niin monella tapaa. Rakasta suomalaista musiikkia.
After studying for a while in IB I noticed I'm more capable to speak about school things in English than in Finnish. It never bothered me, as I didn't have to discuss about my subjects or anything school related in Finnish too often, and even if I had to the situations were always relaxed chatting instead of serious discussion. I studied in English and I'm about to continue studying in English. I don't have any use for Finnish vocabulary of those things (at least for a few years).

But now I'm using English in a totally new way, as my everyday language. All the time, every day. I feel like I'm able to produce good and grammatically correct text most of the time. I write my blog posts in English first and then translate them to Finnish - I don't say the translations are perfect but the content's pretty much the same most of the time. I'm not struggling with written English. It feels easy and natural to write and read. Most of the time I have no problem of understanding people when they speak. But the problems start when I have to open my mouth.

I'm not saying I can't speak. I can, but not the way I want. I notice stupid, simplistic mistakes way too often. I make lots and lots of mistakes. I have my awful Finnish accent. And I can't explain myself as well as I'd like to.  Every now and then I have a chat with someone and think afterwards that it went well, I didn't make single mistake (or at least not one that I would have noticed), and I actually completed nice sentences. But most of the time I feel a bit frustrated. I should know this language better. I know I can do better.

En väitä, ettenkö pystyisi puhumaan. Pystyn, mutta en niin kuin haluaisin. Huomaan typeriä, yksinkertaisia virheitä jatkuvasti. Teen joka päivä järjettömän määrän virheitä. Puhun kamalalla suomiaksentillani.
With Finnish the problem is reverse. I think I'm still able to speak it out loud, it's not a problem. (Even though I speak Finnish maybe once a week.) But when I write my blog I'm struggling to find the words and I'm struggling with the grammar. I shouldn't be doing that, I've always known how to write Finnish. English ways of saying things creep into my Finnish and I don't like it. I have to fix my sentences over and over again. Sometimes I even have to use a translator to translate a word from English to Finnish. My mother tongue is not as perfect as it used to be.

I feel like I'm somehow stuck in between of two languages. I can't use either one of them perfectly. And it annoys me, a lot. And in addition to this I'm trying my best to learn German - just to be able to mix three languages at some point... I'd just like to be perfect.

I'm kind of excited and kind of horrified of what my English and Finnish will look and sound like after a few months. If I'm lucky I'll catch a tiny bit of Australian accent and get a lot more fluent. If I'm even luckier my Finnish starts flowing at some point again - it just requires that extra effort right now. Everything requires extra effort and it's weird. It's something I haven't used to. But hopefully it will be all worth it!

Saturday night with the girls

This week has been one of those regular weeks - nothing too special but lots of nice small things. I've been doing a bit of extra work and seen my friends. Earlier this week we met up with Natalie (and quickly with Viktoria as well) to plan our epic roadtrip that will hopefully take place in two weeks. It's just a bit tricky to find a car but we'll make it work somehow. I hope.

We were supposed to be spending yesterday at Bull&Barrel festival but as the weather's been awful the whole venue is full of water and the whole thing was cancelled. To be honest we were quite disappointed but instead of cancelling everything Natalie, Minea, and Viktoria ended up coming over to our place.

We met up in shopping centre, did a bit of shopping and drove back here. For dinner we made pizzas from the scratch and they were pretty great! Besides pizza the evening included a lot of talking, laughing, watching Grease, eating way too much chocolate, drinking some girly sparkling wine, and just relaxing.

I got to say I'm really happy that I've found these awesome girls! I already know I'm going to see them later on in life as well, and I already know I'm gonna miss Natalie so much - she's the first one of us to leave WA and we still have so many plans for these last two months. It's crazy how time goes on so quickly.

My sister's going to be here in five days, which is crazy as well. But it's also more than awesome. Can't wait to see her! We're going to leave to Perth with my host mum and the kids on Tuesday and I'm coming back down with my sister in a week or so. Then it's going to be busy as I want to show her as much as possible - I think my blog won't be updating as much as it usually does but if you want to follow where I'm going and what I'm doing check out my snapchat @fiiaelina

Pikkusisko tulee olemaan täällä viiden päivän päästä, sekin on hullua.
P.s. I think it must be a big sister thing to be more worried about your sister flying here on her own than you were about yourself moving to the other side of the world. I know she'll be okay and she knows what she's doing but I can be nothing but terrified.

I wish I was in Finland

Sorry for the provocative title. I don't really wish I was back in Finland, I'm still happy here in Oz. But there are a few things that make me hope I could travel back home just for a day and come back here. I decided to list these things.

Pahoitteluni provokatiivisesta otsikosta. En oikeasti toivo olevani takaisin suomessa, olen edelleenkin onnellinen täällä Ausseissa. Mutta olen pistänyt merkille muutaman jutun, joiden takia toivoisin voivani matkustaa yhdeksi päiväksi takaisin kotiin vain tullakseni sitten takaisin tänne. Päätinkin listata nämä asiat.
- IB graduation ceremony. It was held on Friday the 2nd of September. Four out of six of us were present and I would have loved to take part. I would have loved to see all my teachers and the younger IB students. I just loved (and to be honest, hated, too) those three years of IB. But you can be sure that I'll go and visit my old school next year before leaving to Scotland and hopefully I'll have a chance to take part to the graduation ceremony of the current IB2s!
/ IBn valmistujaisjuhla.
- Apulanta-movie. Some of you might know that one of my favourite bands is a Finnish band called Apulanta. I spent my 18th birthday on their gig and last Christmas I bought tickets to their concert and took by little sis there with me. This year a movie of the early years of Apulanta was released and I could have paid anything to get to one of these premieres where the actual band with the actors of the movie were playing before the movie itself started.
/ Apulanta-elokuva.
- The autumn colours. I hate to miss all the beautiful colours the Finnish autumn has to offer, I love autumn in a way. I kind of skip the best parts of this time of the year - getting to find your nicest autumn clothes and enjoying the chilly evenings, stars that can be seen again, Northern Lights that have been dancing in the sky lately, and the colours. But I have to say I don't miss the rain, wind, too cold days, all the grayness and the fact it's gonna be dark for the next months!
/ Ruska.
- I would have scratched my dad's car instead of host mum's. Who knows the feeling when you're backing on a car park, concentrate on what's happening behind and then you hear the front corner of the car hitting something? Well I know now. Could have been an accident, could have been bigger damage, but still. I'm annoyed at myself. And it doesn't help that it wasn't even my car but someone else's. I wouldn't have been happy to go home and tell my dad I scratched his car but it would have been a tiny bit less annoying. At least that's what I imagine to annoy myself more.
No, minä tiedän nyt.
And all the other little things. I'm still happy in Australia and I don't want to go home for a while but there are moments when I wish I could share them with people in Finland or moments when I'd love to be back in Finland to take part to something. But in general I'm more than happy to be here. I'm where I belong. I need to be right here right now.

Mun täytyy olla just täällä just nyt.

P.s. The photos are from the last month when I went for a little walk in Eaton along Collie River - I have to say I love this area. Also the post was written a while ago, but I think it's still pretty relevant.

Spontaneous roadtrip to Perth and other stuff

This week has been the first weekend of school holidays and that's why there's been lots happening around the city. This meant that we headed to one of our shopping centres on Thursday with my host mum and the kids to meet a koala. This koala was called Dexter and well, I can tick one more thing out of my bucket list for Australia! And well I held a some sort of python as well and she was a pretty nice creature, too.

This weekend I've spent relaxing. I binge watched all the episodes of the newest season of Vain Elämää (a Finnish TV reality show with artists gathering together for a week and performing each other's songs) as I finally got it working here!

Tämän viikonlopun taas kulutin rentoutumiseen. Katsoin eilen putkeen kaikki episodit viimeisimmästä Vain Elämää kaudesta, kun kerran sain sen vihdoin toimimaan täällä.
Today we headed to Perth with my friends Natalie and Viktoria and that's where these pics are from. We were supposed to meet up in Bunbury and do something there but as Natalie's phone broke down two days ago and she needed to go to the Apple store we had a good reason to do this little roadtrip!

And it was a day well spent! The weather wasn't the best when we left but it was pretty sunny for the rest of the day (but a bit cold though). And it was great to catch up with the girls, just talk and listen to music and laugh and eat chocolate! The spontaneous ideas are the best and friends like this are just awesome.

So that's what I've been up to lately. Now I'm just trying to write a few posts to be published during this month. In two weeks my sister's gonna be here and I know for sure I won't be spending too much time on my laptop as I rather use it to have fun with her. So hopefully I'll get some posts ready to be published during that time or otherwise it will be a quiet blog for a while!

Siinäpä siis viimeaikojen kuulumiset. Nyt yritän kirjoitella muutaman postauksen tätä kuuta varten varastoon. Kahden viikon päästä pikkusisko on täällä, enkä aio viettää liikaa aikaa läppärin ääressä. Käytän aikani mieluummin siskon kanssa. Jospa siis saan joitain postauksia valmiiksi tai seuraavista viikoista tulee varsin hiljaisia täällä!
How was your weekend?
Miten sun viikonloppu sujui?
