Leaving Finland behind, again.

I'm leaving Finland today. I came here about three weeks ago. Four days of travelling, all the way from New Zealand, wasn't fun but I made it. I finally got to see my family and friends and it was great but it wasn't what I planned and I felt confused.

Flying overseas back to your home country for your grandfather's funeral isn't fun business. It's not a light "I'm just going for a short holiday from a holiday" thing. It's sad, it messes up everything you've planned. I cancelled a job and a few travel plans to be with my loved ones and to say goodbye to my grandfather. And I don't regret it, it was something I needed, and coming to the funeral was the right thing to do. I wanted to do it and I'm happy that I did.

But even though I missed my family and wanted to be with them when the sad news came. I felt like I want to go home right now but I kept travelling for three weeks before I actually flew back and the funeral took place. I thought I would be relieved to go home after those three long weeks. But I wasn't. I didn't want to leave Australia (I even cried when the plane took off...), I didn't want to go to Finland, and I felt super annoyed at being here. I felt like I don't belong here and I hated everyone who spoke Finnish. And I love my mother tongue.

But somehow those three weeks here passed by and suddenly it was time to pack my bag again and leave. And I don't want to leave. I feel like I haven't had enough time to actually be with people, I haven't had time to stay home and relax, I haven't done all the things I wanted to, and I don't want to go travelling again. This is the second time in my life when the thought of travelling doesn't make me jump of excitement. The other time was when I had to leave my home in Western Australia. What's wrong with me nowadays?

Mikä minussa on vikana nykyään?
But maybe there's nothing wrong with me. Moving abroad is all fun and exciting until you have to say goodbyes way too often. Suddenly you realize you will always miss someone or something, no matter where you are. You always feel like you should be somewhere else, you always feel like you miss out on something, you always miss your home. It's about choices. I choose to travel, I choose to explore and do the thing that makes me happy. I've been happier than ever before for the past year and I wouldn't change a thing. But still sometimes "what if" comes in mind, and I doubt whether or not I'm making the right decisions.

Deep inside I know my decisions are right for me but I can't help but wonder if this is always going to be my life? Goodbyes being so hard. Is it going to be worth it? I think it is and it will be. It's a valuable thing to have so many people around me and around the world. But it does make your life damn hard when you can't be there for everyone at the same time.

This time I'm flying to Brisbane, then I'm going to Cairns, and then I'm going home. That's the part I'm most excited about at the moment - seeing my Australian family again. I know I'm going to get excited about exploring some of the East Coast of Australia as well once I'm on board. I know the same old feeling of excitement will come back when I'm flying again. That's who I am and that's what I do, I travel and I love. I love so many places and so many people and I'm lucky to have a life that looks exactly like mine even though it's confusing and hard sometimes.

In a month I'm going to hug my best friend in Singapore and we're exploring Southeast Asia for five weeks and I know I'm going to love it, another adventure to add on our journey together. Then I'm coming back to Finland. It's just two months I'm going to be away and it's nothing, but it's enough to make me a bit more grown up, a bit more independent, and a bit more open-minded and a bit more experienced. Maybe I can start saying I'm well-travelled after ticking the 20th country off my list?

Leaving is hard, living is easy, and life is unfair and unexpected. But things happen for a reason and I know I'm stronger than I've ever been, and it's not a bad thing to love and to be loved. And it's okay to feel confused. Right now I hate packing, right now I hate leaving, and right now I don't want to go to Australia but it's all fine. I'm going to thank myself in the end and I can say I've been there, done that, and nothing's going to stop me from living.

Photos are from here and there, moments from the past couple of weeks.

Top 3 hostels in New Zealand

As you probably know, I spent three weeks in New Zealand in March. It was a beautiful country that I travelled through with a small budget. For that very reason I became familiar with sleeping in a car and with quite a few hostels. There were three that stood out from the others and I wanted to share these tips with you - there's always a chance that someone finds this useful!

Kuten varmaan tiedättekin, vietin kolme viikkoa maaliskuusta Uusi-Seelannissa. Matkasin läpi tämän kauniin maan pienellä budjetilla, joten autossa nukkuminen ja hostellit tulivat tutuiksi. Kolme viimeksi mainituista erottui joukosta ollessaan varsin mieleisiä paikkoja ja halusin jakaa ne teillekin. Onhan aina mahdollisuus, että joku näistä vinkeistä hyöytyy ja tykkään antaa näkyvyyttä oikeasti kivoille paikoille!
The Black Sheep backpackers, Queenstown, South Island
This hostel was the first one I slept in in New Zealand and it was great. A few minutes walk from the town centre, spacious rooms, free Wi-Fi throughout the hostel, a pool, and cozy common areas. The beds were super private as all the bunks had curtains you were able to close. And you didn't even have to leave your phone in the corner of the room while charging - everyone had their own lamp and wall plug (with USB port as well) next to the bed! The only minus was smallish, not so nice kitchen. (The pic above is the view from my room's window!)

(Yllä oleva kuva on huoneeni ikkunasta näkynyt maisema!)
Paradiso, Nelson, South Island
Paradiso was absolutely amazing, probably the best hostel I've ever been to. A huge pool, spacious dorm rooms, very private showers, great kitchen, free food... I could keep listing the things I loved about this place! Absolutely worth of your money, as it wasn't any more expensive than an average hostel in New Zealand but the facilities were better than anything I saw on my trip!

Central Backpackers, Rotorua, North Island
If you're looking a home-like feeling and a pretty good location for a reasonable price in Rotorua, this is a place to go. Central Backpackers was a pleasant experience, the hostel being a family business and the rooms being spacious as well. No bunk beds, but comfy singles instead. The kitchen was clean and inviting, and we got free cake on one of the days we spent there!

+ If you're camping or sleep in your car and end up in Taupo (North Island), go to Reids Farm Free Campsite and sleep there. The best free camping site ever!

Sorry, Sydney, but I didn't like you

Sydney, the city everyone wants to see on their journey to Australia. I wanted to see it as well and found myself there in the beginning of March. Unlikely so many others I didn't like it. Sydney left me a bit cold. I didn't find any sort of connection with the place and apart from the great Saturday night in Mardi Gras 2017 and the lovely people who accommodated us, I didn't find too many things to get excited about.

Sydney on kaupunki, jossa jokainen tahtoo pysähtyä Australian reissullaan.
The Opera house was a disappointment - the thing I've known about Australia ever since I was a kid. This spectacular landmark was greater in my daydreams than in real life. The Harbor Bridge was a lot better, the views are worth the walk. A ferry to Manly and a walk there was nice but that's pretty much it.

Sydney certainly is a big city and I'm happy I can say I've been there and seen it, but I wouldn't go again. It wasn't anything special for me and I'd rather opt for Melbourne if I had to choose between those two. It's not completely horrible, there are friendly people, lots of places to eat out, and some nice spots, but it wasn't a city for me.

Have you ever went to a city with high expectations and been disappointed?
Oletko koskaan mennyt kaupunkiin suurin odotuksin ja pettynyt pahemman kerran?

Until we meet again

Saturday 8th of April, a beautiful and sunny spring day in Lapland. The hardest day after hearing the news about my Grandfather. The funeral was simple and small, something I think my Grandfather would have approved. The weather couldn't have been better and even though it was extremely sad I'm feeling relieved that it's done now. Life goes on even though it will never be the same.

I've been preparing a few posts for you, I finally try to get back on track with posting more regularly now when life gets back to somewhat normal. Hopefully.

Sydney Mardi Gras 2017

I'm in Finland now, in Lapland to be more precise, right now. My grandfather's funeral, visiting my grandma, and seeing other relatives. That's pretty much my weekend summed up. But this time I'm not going to talk about that but take a look back to beginning of March and Sydney.

Olen parhaillaan Suomessa, tarkemmin ottaen Lapissa.
A huge LGBT festival called Sydney Mardi Gras took place on out first weekend in Sydney and we decided to go and watch. I've never attended to anything like that before and I have to say it was a great experience. So many people and so much love. The atmosphere was something you can't really even describe and it was a lot of fun.

And it was one of those events that actually makes you think how unfair and horrible our world is as we still need something like this. It's sad that there are so many people who can't be themselves or if they're they'll get judged. Not even mentioning how many places still consider homosexuality a disease and/or illegal. I'm happy we finally legalized the same sex marriage in Finland this year, it was about the time.

But anyway. I think the photos tell the story better than my words! Say yes to love. And take part to the next Sydney Mardi Gras if you happen to be there in March.

Kuvat kertonevat kuitenkin enemmän kuin sanat. Sano kyllä rakkaudelle ja jos satut Sydneyhin seuraavan Mardi Grasin aikaan suosittelen ehdottomasti osallistumaan!

Happy birthday to me and I'm back in Finland

The title has it all: I'm in Finland and I'm 20. Sounds like I should be an adult now but let's see, I don't feel any older than I felt yesterday. My trip back home was long but I made it. Four days (over 85 hours in total) of travelling, including five flights: Auckland-Brisbane-Melbourne-Singapore-Helsinki-Kajaani. Crazy but now it's done and luckily I've got just four flights (I'll return to Brisbane) in the end of month and the transit times are a bit shorter at each airport.

Anyway. I've got nothing much to say this time, I just wanted to say I'm all good and with my family and friends. My two best friends, my sister, my mom, and my auntie were all greeting me at the airport yesterday. I slept well in my own bed last night and spent today hanging out with my best friend - just like we used to do. It's such a weird feeling to be back home as everything has stayed the same but nothing is like it used to be. So many things happening at the same time that I don't know how to feel.

I'll come back and write a few proper posts for you in the near future, now I'll just rest and try to adjust to being here. Right now my thoughts are way too scattered for anything longer or more meaningful than this. Have a lovely week everyone, it's April and I can't believe it either!
