One sad Straya day in Perth

"Australia Day is the official National Day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip. In present-day Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new members of the Australian community."
-Wikipedia

"Australia Day (suom. Australia päivä) on Australian virallinen kansallispäivä.
-Wikipedia, vapaasti suomentaen.
You can have various opinions about the whole Australia day and the way it's currently celebrated. Surely a nation needs a day of uniting everyone and celebrating the path it has already walked and the future it hopes to achieve, but Australia day's current form might not be the best way to do it.

As (hopefully) most of you are more educated than I was before I came to Australia and know the horrible things the Aboriginals faced in the history of Australia. I knew that Europeans have been more than cruel in most of the places we headed to back in the day (take a look at the colonies in Africa, or the situation of black people in America until late last century but also in nowadays world. And I won't even pull the Trump card out here.) but I didn't know how long it took to give back the human rights the whites stole from Aboriginals when they first came here.

For that very reason "the great day of discovering Australia" was a day worth of celebrating for the European colonists but a day that started all the injustice for the Aboriginal people who already lived on this continent. That's why Australia Day in it's current form raises justifiable discussion.

Juurikin tästä syystä koko huikea "Australian löytämisen hetki" oli eurooppalaisille siirtolaisille juhlistamisen arvoinen, mutta toisaalta kaiken epäoikeudenmukaisuuden alku aboriginaaleille, jotka jo tällä maanosalla elivät. Siksi Australia Päivä herättää perustellusti keskustelua nykyisessä muodossaan.
But anyway, this post wasn't supposed to be a post about my political opinion (that I don't really even have) but a post about my very first Australia day. We drove up to Perth with a friend of mine and were supposed to go and enjoy the celebrations on the foreshore of Swan River. Unfortunately for everyone Skyworks were cancelled because of a plane crash taking place. Fortunate for us we didn't see the accident even though we were in the area and no matter how disappointed we were because of the cancellation of the fireworks I won't complain. At least we got to go home from Straya day celebrations - the two people on the plane didn't.

Kaikkien kannalta valitettavasti juhlallisuudet peruttiin ohjelmistoon kuuluneen lentokoneen pudottua jokeen. Onneksemme ei nähty tapaturmaa, vaikka alueella oltiinkin ja vaikka ilotulitusten peruminen aiheutti pettymyksen tunteen, en valita. Ainakin päästiin juhlista takaisin kotiin - ne lentokoneessa olleet kaksi ihmistä eivät.
So, we ended up spending our evening in a relaxed house party playing pool and chatting, and even though I didn't know most of the people there it was pretty nice. Friday we started by swimming in the swimming pool of the hostel we we're staying in (and I can tell you you're ready to start singing Hallelujah when you see a pool in the 40 degree heat) and headed to Rockingham and Penguin Island afterwords - I'll write about them later on.

Päädyttiin siis viettämään ilta rennoissa "kotibileissä" biljardia pelaten ja ihmisten kanssa jutustellen, vaikka suurin osa paikalla olleista olikin mulle ennestään vieraita. Perjantai aloitettiin aamu-uinnilla hostellin uima-altaalla (ja voin vannoa, että jokainen on valmis laulamaan hallelujaa nähdessään uima-altaan siinä 40 asteen helteessä) ja suunnattiin Rockinghamiin ja Penguin Islandille myöhemmin - niistä kertoilen lisää erikseen.
But all in all, Australia Day wasn't exactly what I expected but I guess this all just means I have to come and celebrate it some other time in the future. Australia has become an important place for me and I love it for it's diverse beauty. I could easily imagine staying here forever if it wasn't so bloody far away from everything!

Sorry for being a few days late with this post - just wanted to get the previous one out of the way before publishing this!

Half a year in Australia and I don't want to leave my home

Six short months. It sounds like a long time, half a year, I've got plenty of time to do this and that. But no, it's not a long time at all and it's almost time to say goodbye to my awesome Australian family. Six months ago yesterday I left Finland, six months ago tomorrow I landed in Perth. From that moment on I called this place my home. It wasn't too hard to leave Finland, I wanted to leave and I had had enough of my home town for a while.

Kuusi kuukautta.
Now it's different, I haven't had enough time to get bored of my life here. And even though life's never perfect I've been perfectly happy. It's sad to leave, even though I'm excited to travel and explore.

During these months I've become a tiny bit more Australian. I say it's too cold and pull my jeans on when the temperature drops below 25 Celsius. Everything's "no worries" and I can have a chat with anyone. Thongs (no, they're not flip-flops) are my most used shoes and they're an appropriate thing to wear anywhere anytime. I've learned a lot about myself and I've found life-lasting friendships.

I'm going to miss my home, my life, and all the people here a lot. It's been an unique experience and I can't thank myself enough that I decided to go. At some point I wondered was it a right thing to do, I could be studying and graduating a year earlier. But it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made so far. And I'm almost 100% sure I'll pay a short visit to here West Coast before leaving Australia completely. It's just a chance I can't miss - I want to see my home on the way home.

Next couple of months are going to be completely different to what my life on this side of the world has been so far. Being a backpacker is going to be cool! But right now I'm just going to make most out of my last 10 days here and enjoy every moment - no matter was it about taking the kids out on my own for the last time or meeting up with my friends for one of those awesome Australian nights in Perth.

P.s. Photos from a trip to Perth - Australia Day and 40 degrees heat. More abot that a bit later on!
P.s. Kuvat on reissulta Perthiin - Australia Päivä ja 40 astetta hellettä. Lisää siitä vähän myöhemmin!

Wonders of WA: Ngilgi cave, Yallingup

There's nothing much to say and the pictures are what they are - the place wasn't the best for photographing but I wanted to share this anyway. On our Christmas holidays I visited a cave called Ngilgi cave in Yallingup in Southwest of Western Australia. They do have an entrance fee and I'm not sure if I would go there again but as a once in a lifetime type of a experience it was worth it.

The photos don't really show what it actually looked and felt like to be in the cave, but maybe you get some reference of what it could be like. Definitely something you could consider seeing if you're interested in nature's wonders on your travels in WA. Not the best place I've ever been to, but something interesting and different!

Roadtrip to Great Southern of WA: surrounds of Albany

Last time I shared a few photos from the town of Albany, this time we take a look at the beautiful coastline and the surroundings overall of this beautiful part of Western Australia.

We spent one day driving around and as said, the easiest way to find the best spots is to go and ask a map and tips from the local visitor centre. A map with a couple of places highlighted is free (or if you want you can always leave your small donation) and it really is easier than trying to google everything. I haven't really been a fan of stopping in tourist infos or so before but in Australia I've really learned the value of them. If nothing else it's at least a good starting point if you have no idea where to go. From there you can keep exploring on your own and find the things that are not mentioned in the tourist guides.

Two of the things that I liked the most were called The Gap and Natural bridge. The first one being literally a huge gap in the rock - it was some 25 metres drop from the viewing platform to the cold ocean. The pictures don't really show how spectacular the place was but I guess you get a better idea if you check out the link. For someone like me who's terrified of heights, it required a huge effort to go and stand on the platform with basically nothing but the huge fall underneath my feet, but it was worth it!

Kaksi lempparijuttuani olivat The Gap ja Natural bridge.
The other miracle of nature was right next to the Gap and it was this Natural bridge formed of stones. It isn't as breathtaking as the Gap, but it was cool. It doesn't stop amazing me how interesting things there are in the nature and how they have been formed within hundreds or thousand of years.

If these places interest you, you have to pay a small fee for entering the area, but as it's per vehicle, not per person, the cost wasn't bad at all.

Albany is just worth exploring around by car - as you can hopefully see from the photos! After the day of driving we camped in one of the caravan parks and headed back home on the next morning. I'll still write one more post concluding the whole thing, but I can say already this trip in October it was one of the best roadtrips I've ever been on!

Travel plans for the year 2017

For most of the people new year means new year's resolutions. I'm not a huge fan of those, but made a few promises or plans or however you want to call them that are related to travelling. And January is pretty much gone already so I would be totally late if I called these resolutions. Anyway, I thought I could share them with you, so let's get started!

Tammikuu on jo kummiskin aikalailla mennyt, joten olen auttamattomasti myöhässä kutsuakseni näitä uudenvuodenlupauksiksi. Tahdoin kummiskin jakaa nämä teillekin, joten eiköhän aloiteta!

So, in general: I want to travel more and further away than ever before. But to be honest that's pretty much my plan every single year. This time it's going to mean backpacking, solo travelling, and moving abroad again, and I have a tangible goal of ticking the 20th country off my list (I'm going on 16 now, 17 if Finland counts). The plans that I've actually made and partly put into reality, are mainly Australia-related, but let's just start from the beginning and go through the whole year in a chronological order.

In February I'm going to visit Melbourne and Tasmania with my friend Viktoria. In the beginning of March we're flying to Sydney, and from there on I'll be travelling on my own. I'm spending the rest of the month in New Zealand and actually booked the flights this week!

In April I'm planning to settle down a bit and find a short-term au pair job in Brisbane. This is starting to look good and I think I've found a family. In the beginning of May I'm hopefully visiting Cairns and the surrounds, and then coming back to Western Australia for a short visit. Towards the end of the month I'll most probably start heading back to Europe through Asia.

Kuun lopussa olisi tarkoitus suunnata Aasian läpi kohti Eurooppaa.
June I'm planning to spend backpacking in Asia. On my "must see" list is at least one country: Singapore. If the city I'm taking off when leaving Australia is Perth, I'll most probably head to Bali (part of Indonesia) first just because it would be a cheap and easy way to start my travels outside the western world. From Bali to Singapore and from Singapore to Malaysia, just because it sounds interesting and it would be easy to reach when I'd be technically already there. After Malaysia I might head to Thailand, let's see.

Kesäkuu on tarkoitus reppureissata Aasiassa.

Other Asian countries that interest me include places such as Philippines and Vietnam, but I have to admit I haven't got time to plan that far yet. However I'm aiming to return back to Europe sometime around the end of June or beginning of July, most probably landing somewhere else than Finland first as it's likely to be cheaper than finding flights straight to Helsinki.

July and August are probably going to be months to be spent in Finland, but I'm hoping to catch up with my "Australian friends" around this time - if we all are in Europe. It might mean us meeting in to Germany, Sweden, Finland, or Åland. Or then we just travel somewhere else, for example Denmark would be right in the middle but let's see.

Tai saatetaan me treffata jossain ihan muuallakin, esim. Tanska ois sopivasti siinä keskellä!

In September I'm going to move to Scotland and that's probably a big enough thing to keep me busy for at least a month. Towards the end of the year I'm hoping to visit somewhere in Europe with my family, hopefully it's a new place for me as well. We've been talking about a family vacation for some time now and I'm pretty sure it happens - not just sure how, where, or when. October, November, December, are so far away that I haven't had time to even think about them, but that would be when the trip with my parents and sister would possibly take place. Besides that I'm going to spend time discovering my new home country.

So that's pretty much it, looks like I'll be busy, and looks like my goal of achieving 20 countries is going to be realistic - just four more to go!

Siinäpä se sitten olikin suunilleen. Vaikuttaa siltä, että kiirettä tulee pitämään ja 20. maan saavuttaminenkin näyttää realistiselta - neljä jäljellä tavoitteeseen!

Roadtrip to Great Southern of WA: Albany

It's time to take a look back to October again and head back to our roadtrip to south. Last time I shared the last photos from Denmark, this time we'll take a little look to our final destination: Albany. According to Wikipedia, Albany is the oldest permanently settled town in Western Australia, predating Perth and Fremantle by over two years. It's a nice smallish town on the southern coast of Western Australia.

On vissiin aika jälleen palata lokakuulle ja roadtripille etelään. Viimeksi jaoin viimeiset kuvat Denmarkista, tällä kertaa kurkataan vikaan kohteeseemme Albanyyn. Albany onkin kiva, pikkuinen kaupunki Länsi-Australian etelärannikkolla.
We spent the last day of our roadtrip in Albany and started by stopping in the visitor centre to get some maps and tips on what to see in the area if you've got only one day to spend like we did. The first things we ended up doing were charging our phones, washing our faces, and filling our water bottles after a night on a free camping site.

Then we drove up to Padre White lookout where most of these pics are from - as we expected, the views were awesome. The lookout was pretty much the only tourist attraction we visited in the town itself, all the other spots were a relatively short drive away and they are something I'll talk more about next time.

Seuraavaksi ajettiin ylös Padre Whiten maisemapaikalle, josta suurin osa kuvista on otettu. Kuten odottaa saattoi, olivat maisemat aika huikeat. Kyseinen paikka olikin oikeastaan ainoa turistikohde, jossa itse kaupungissa pysähdyttiin - kaikki muut paikat olivat lyhyehkön ajomatkan päässä ja niistä puhutaankin lisää ensi kerralla.
Overall I really liked Albany. It has this lovely little coastal town feeling. Beautiful views and amazing coastline, and relaxed atmosphere. Drive from Bunbury is only 4 hours if you do the whole leap at once, and there are plenty of caravan parks and camping sites to stay on.

Kaikkiaan tykkäsin Albanysta tosi paljon. Sieltä löytyy just sellaista ihanaa, pienen rannikkokaupungin fiilistä.
Our roadtrip being awesome anyway, Albany was the part I enjoyed probably the most. Or at least liked the most as an individual place - highly recommend to anyone visiting Western Australia!

One sunny afternoon

Sex and the city. Or at least the city. In several occasions, especially during past few months when I've been getting to know lots of new people and many of introductions have been made, I've been labeled as a country girl or as a small town girl the least. I'm Fiia from Finland but I'm also the girl from a small town in the middle of nowhere in the northern Finland. In addition to that I've been living on a small farm the past six months and I love it. I've got a soul of a country girl and my heart beats for the open night sky and the sight of the horses next door. The quietness that reveals all the smallest sounds. And the freaking annoying flies that get everywhere and you can't get rid of no matter how hard you try to put fly traps around the house.

However that's not the whole truth. I started writing this post while I was sitting in a train, on my way to the city centre of Perth. I watched out of the window, saw cars packing on a ramp leading to one of the suburban areas. I listened to the sections of conversations I was able to catch around me and I turned mobile data off on my phone.

Se ei kuitenkaan ole koko totuus. Aloin kirjoittamaan tätä postausta istuessani junassa matkalla Perthiin. Katsoin ikkunasta rampille kasautuvaa autojen virtaa, kuuntelin ympärilläni puhuvia ihmisiä ja onnistuin poimimaan keskustelunpätkiä sieltä täältä. Laitoin puhelimen mobiilidatan pois päältä.
I enjoy being on my own but I enjoy being in a crowd. I love the beat of the city. The never stopping, never tiring feel of relaxed rush. I love to sit down, to see and hear. I had to get out of the train, take the escalator and walk out to the street. It's not as busy as my ultimate love London. Perth is quite a small city, it's easy to handle. It's not my favourite, but I love to be here. I love to be in the middle of the action, just on my own because in the city you're never alone. Listening to someone play their guitar on the street. Nowadays I have a habit of getting rid of a couple of coins every time I see someone who plays well. It makes me happy. It makes them happy. Or at least I hope so giving away my 20 cents.

Perth on melko pieni, helposti hallittava kokonaisuus. Joku soittaa kadulla kitaraansa. Nykyään minulla on tapana päästä eroon kolikoista antamalla niitä katusoittajille. Se tekee minusta iloisen. Se tekee jonkun muun iloiseksi. Ainakin uskottelen niin itselleni antaessani 20 senttiäni pois.
It most probably is my second last time in this city for a while. I've got a month left and in a blink of an eye it will be gone. I overheard two other Finns speaking - I didn't say hi, I just listened. They were tourists and I felt almost like a local or at least almost like Australian.

Kuulin kahden suomalaisen puhuvan. En sanonut hei, kuuntelin vain. He olivat selvästi turisteja ja minä tunsin oloni melkein paikalliseksi, ainakin melkein australialaiseksi.
I took a ferry to South Perth over the Swanriver. I recognize a newly found crush with this area, why haven't I come here before? Technically I've been on this side of the river earlier but haven't had time (or interest would be a better word) to walk around and see. I'm not in love with Perth but over here I could live. This place has something English in it. And everyone knows I love England. Surely it doesn't look the same with all the palm trees and +25 degrees in January, but it's the feeling.

I'm sitting in a park called Windsor park. Almost like in London. I can't wait to move to Edinburgh and start exploring it. It seems to be a picturesque place that certainly has lots to offer. I'm a city girl in a way. One day I'll be walking busy on the streets of London, wearing my suit. I'll be negotiating big deals with my international contacts, I'll be budgeting and managing on the bigger scale, and I'll be someone to actually take seriously. But for now the only negotiation I have to have is with myself - wether or not to get up of this bench and head somewhere else or stay here a bit longer. The only finances I need to take care of are my personal and the day traveler ticket I bought doesn't destroy my economy but rather gives me a freedom to get around as much as I wish for one day.

And for now I don't have to be the one to be taken seriously. I can be the girl who walks around in her Game of Thrones t-shirt that says "You know nothing, Jon Snow" and the girl who smiles even brighter when a stranger - who wasn't an Ozzie for sure - says "I love your shirt" and smiles to her. A magpie runs on the field in front of me and looks silly. I smile again because these are the simple moments to live for.
