When did airports turn into sad places?

12/05/2016

Airports. I never thought I would write this kind of post about airports but here we are. As we all know, airports are an essential part of your travels, places you go through and places that are your destinations but not quite. Places where the time stands still and places where the clock ticks faster than ever when you try to run and catch your connecting flight.

I've loved the small ones with two planes leaving and coming every day, they're cute. I love the airports like Frankfurt where you walk for half an hour from gate to gate or Singapore that is just stunning. I've always loved the feeling you get, the adventure that awaits.

Olen aina rakastanut lentokenttiä. Pieniä kenttiä, joille laskeutuu kaksi konetta päivässä, niissä on jotain söpöä.
People hugging, kissing, smiling, and waving. People rushing to their flights and people brushing their teeth in the restroom. I've spent hours at the airports. Slept rather badly, washed my face and changed my clothes and paid way too much for a piece of bread. And I've loved it no matter how boring or hectic it sometimes has been. But I've been always heading for an adventure, known I'm about to hop in to a plane and fly far far away, somewhere I've never been before.

I've always loved travelling and I've always loved leaving. I've always known I can come back and the world is out there for us to explore. I've loved coming home, with hundreds of memories, with stories to tell, and pictures to share. But it has always been me who's coming and going. That's not the case anymore.

I picked my sister up from the airport and dropped her off. Tears and the last hug and no matter how happy I was because we had such great three weeks I felt sad when she walked to the security check. Last Thursday I was saying goodbye to my friend. Natalie flew back home to Sweden and I have no idea when and where we're going to see again - I know it's going to happen, but is it going to be months or years, I do not know. And I cried again.

The airports are not only exciting places anymore. They're sad places. They're places of huge emotions. They're places to meet your own fears. I realized I'm not just excited about next year and all my great backpacking plans. For the first time in my life I'm sad, a bit afraid. I'm sad because I know I have to leave and start travelling, I don't want to do it. I still have a couple of months left in WA but I'm already wondering when I can come back and could I just cancel everything and stay here forever.

Leaving Finland wasn't hard, I just wanted to get going. I know it's always going to be my home. Leaving Western Australia will be a lot harder. It has become my home and it always will be my home, a home where the greatest of memories have been made. I know I'll come back one day but when that day comes, who knows. And I don't want to leave. I don't want to go.

But the show must go on and I must keep moving, I was born to fly. And the downside of the life I chose is the constant goodbyes, they're always the hardest part. And they're probably even harder when you're not the one leaving. Airports are places where the whole variety of emotions are shown. Airports are confusing places, they're ends and new beginnings. They're places to take a breath and take the fall and see what happens. If it's worth the risk it's worth it all. I took a risk and fell in love and it's going to hurt, but I have to catch the plane. You have to catch the plane. And I'm lucky enough to have friends that have gypsy souls like mine, that are brave enough to fly.

Mutta the show must go on ja minun täytyy jatkaa matkaa, synnyin lentämään.
With these thoughts I wanted to say goodbye for now, thanks for creating the most awesome of memories with me, thanks for being such a great friend, and you'll always be mina svenska tjej Natalie ♥ I'll see you in Sweden or Finland or Australia or wherever life leads us - vi ses och puss och kram!

Näiden ajatusten myötä halusin sanoa hyvästit tältä erää, kiitos mahtavista muistoista, kiitos, kun olet niin ihana ystävä, ja tulet aina olemaan mina svenska tjej Natalie ♥ Nähdään Ruotsissa tai Suomessa tai Australiassa tai mihin ikinä päädytäänkään - vi ses och puss och kram!

P.s. Checked 12 words from the dictionary today when translating this to Finnish - I do not handle my mother tongue anymore. The pics are from the last week. Two trips to Perth. A regular Christmas parade, camels included. A little pub on a dark alley you should never go in the evening, knock the door and give the password and you get in. Just like in the movies. Christmas shopping that didn't go so well. Catching up with friends. A very tired au pair on Monday morning. A good life.

P.s. Tsekkasin 12 sanaa sanakirjasta kääntäessäni tätä suomeksi tänään - en händlää äidinkieltäni enää. Kuvat on viime viikolta - kaksi reissua Perthiin. Ihan jokapäiväinen jouluparaati kameleineen kaikkineen. Pieni, hämyisä pubi syrjäkujalla, jolle ei koskaan pitäisi kävellä illalla, koputa oveen, anna salasana ja pääset sisään. Ihan niinkuin leffoissa. Joulushoppailua, joka ei sujunut kovin hyvin. Kaverien kanssa kuulumisien päivittämistä. Tosi väsynyt au pair maanantaiaamuna. Hyvä elämä.

    1. Kiitos ihanasta kommentista :) Se on kyllä totta, että lähteminen on helpompaa, kuin katsoa muiden lähtevän!
