Brexit. The word that everyone has heard and seen about billion times. The topic that comes up in lectures pretty much weekly, is in the headlines every day with May doing this and EU saying that, and is something I get asked about a lot. How is Brexit going to affect you? How is it going to affect your studies? Are you still going to stay in Scotland? The honest answer to most of the time is 'I don't know'.

Brexit. Tuo sana, jonka jokainen on kuullut ja nähnyt about biljoona kertaa. Aihe, joka nousee esille luennoilla aikalailla viikottain, on uutisissa joka päivä, kun May tekee tätä ja EU sanoo sitä, ja on asia, josta minulta kysytään usein. Kuinka Brexit tulee vaikuttamaan suhun? Kunka se tulee vaikuttamaan opintoihin? Aionko silti pysyä Skotlannissa? Rehellinen vastaus on yleensä, että en tiedä.

I don't know how Brexit will affect me but I want to believe it will barely affect me at all. I know I might need to apply for a pre-settled status which is likely to cost me some money. And I know I'm not going to apply for it just yet as no-one knows is it actually going to be absolutely necessary in the end. How is Brexit going to affect my studies? It won't. Scotland's student funding system has promised to keep paying EU students' tuition fees if they've started their studies in academic year 2018-2019 or earlier. I started in 2017 so I should be safe. Scotland has huge numbers of international students anyway and they want to keep welcoming us here. I'm not worried about not being able to finish my studies.

En tiedä, kuinka Brexit tulee vaikuttamaan minuun, mutta haluan uskoa, ettei se vaikuta juuri ollenkaan. Tiedän, että saatan joutua hakemaan "pre-settled statusta", joka on lupa olla maassa, ja se tulee maksamaan minulle rahaa. Tiedän myös, etten hae sitä vielä, sillä kukaan ei ole varma, onko se lopulta ihan pakollinen juttu kuitenkaan. Kuinka Brexit vaikuttaa opintoihini? Ei mitenkään. Skotlannin opiskelijoiden rahoitussysteemit ovat luvanneet maksaa jatkossakin EU-opiskelijoiden lukuvuosimaksut, jos opiskelut on aloitettu vuonna 2018-2019 tai aiemmin. Minä aloitin 2017, joten olen turvassa. Skotlannissa on isot määrät kansainvälisiä opiskelijoita joka tapauksessa, eikä meistä haluta eroon. En ole huolissani opintojeni jatkumisesta.

And am I still going to stay in Scotland? Yes. I know I can finish my degree here, and after that I've lived here for four years. If I need to, I'll do masters after my undergrad and get another year or two in Scotland under my belt. I've got a job here and I'm not planning on quitting anytime soon. I've got a national insurance number, I've got my UK phone number and bank accounts, I've got my address here. I don't see why I couldn't and wouldn't stay in Scotland even after Brexit. I've got my life in here.

Ja aionko edelleen pysyä Skotlannissa? Kyllä. Tiedän voivani viedä tutkinnon loppuun ja sen jälkeen olen asunut täällä jo neljä vuotta. Tarvittaessa teen perään maisterin ja kartutan brittiaikaani vuodella tai parilla. Minulla on täällä työ, enkä ole suunnitellut ottavani lopareita ihan lähiaikoina. Minulla on paikallinen henkilötunnuksen tapainen, minulla on UK-numero ja pankkitilit, mun osoite on täällä. En näe, miksen voisi ja haluaisi pysyä Skotlannissa Brexitin jälkeenkin. What I won't do though is to book a holiday just around the actual Brexit date. I have no doubt in my mind about whether or not I would be let back in to the country. But I do have doubts what comes to flights coming in if it's a no deal Brexit. But other than that, has Brexit affected my life anyhow? No, it hasn't. I don't see the point in panicking and preparing for the worst. I want to believe I can still get food from the nearby Lidl after Brexit and I want to believe Britain will be quick enough to negotiate trade deals and whatever else is needed. I'm not worrying about me not being able to stay in here.

Se, mitä en kuitenkaan aio tehdä, on varata lomamatkaa itse Brexit-päivän lähistölle. En epäile, etteikö minua päästettäisi takaisin maahan, mutta minulla on epäilykseni lentoliikenteen sujuvuudesta, jos lopputulema on "no deal" Brexit. Mutta onko Brexit vaikuttanut elämääni mitenkään muuten? Ei. Tahdon uskoa, että tulen edelleen saamaan ruokaa läheisestä Lidlistä Brexitin jälkeenkin ja haluan uskoa, että Britannia saa neuvoteltua kauppasopimuksensa sun muut riittävän nopeasti. En ole huolissani siitä, pystynkö jäämään tänne.

What I do think is that Brexit is the absolute worst decision the UK could have made. It's the dumbest thing one could imagine. I think people had no idea what they were voting for when they voted to leave back in 2016. I remember being on a holiday in England when the referendum took place and I remember believing it would never happen. I still kind of wish it wouldn't happen. But if and when it does, I'm not gonna let it affect my life. I know the UK needs educated talent. I know the UK relies heavily on foreign workforce. And I know I'm not the type of immigrant this country wants to get rid off.

Ajattelen kuitenkin, että Brexit on ehdottomasti huonoin päätön, minkä UK on koskaan voinut tehdä. Se on tyhmin juttu, minkä voin kuvitella. Luulen, että ihmisillä ei ollut hajuakaan, mitä he äänestivätkään, kun sanoivat kyllä eroamiselle vuonna 2016. Olin lomalla Englannissa, kun kansanäänestys tapahtui ja muistan, etten uskonut Brexitin koskaan toteutuvan. Tavallaan edelleen toivon, ettei se toteutuisi. Mutta jos ja kun se tapahtuu, en aio antaa sen vaikuttaa elämääni. Tiedän, että Britit tarvitsee koulutettua osaamista. Tiedän, että Britit ovat riippuvaisia ulkomaisesta työvoimasta. Ja tiedän, etten ole sellainen maahanmuuttaja, josta tämä maa haluaa eroon.

And if nothing else positive has emerged from this huge political mess, it has given a great deal of things to talk about. It is and it probably will be for a long time something that causes a lot of discussion, and something that everyone has an opinion about. My opinion being that we all would have been better off without Brexit. But what can you do about it anymore?

Ja jos mitään muuta positiivistä tästä poliittisesta sotkusta ei ole tullutkaan, niin ainakin se on antanut paljon puheenaihetta. Brexit on ja tulee olemaan aihe, joka aiheuttaa paljon keskustelua ja jokaisella tulee olemaan jonkinlainen mielipide aiheen ympärillä. Minun mielipiteeni ollessa se, että oltaisiin kaikki pärjätty paremmin ilman koko Brexitiä. Mutta mitäpä sille enää mahtaa?

So to conclude: I don't know what Brexit will bring but I know I won't let it affect my life. I'm happy here and I'm planning on being happy here for many years to come. You other fellow Finns in the UK (or why not everyone else as well), what are your feelings around Brexit? Worried, scared? Do you even care or should we even worry? I personally find it quite amusing to watch people panic and prepare for the worst and what a mess this once so great kingdom has become. But maybe it's just me and I should indeed worry a bit more.

Joten kaiken kaikkiaan, en tiedä mihin Brexit johtaa, mutta tiedän, etten anna sen vaikuttaa elämääni. Olen täällä onnellinen ja aion olla vielä monta vuotta. Mitä te muut Britannian suomalaiset (tai miksei kaikki muutkin) ajatellette Brixitistä? Oletteko huolissaan, peloissaan Jaksatteko edes välittää? Minä henkilökohtaisesti olen melko huovittunut siitä, kuinka ihmisen panikoivat ja varautuvat pahimpaan, sekä siitä, miten tämä kerran niin mahtava kuningaskunta on päätynyt tällaiseksi sotkuksi. Ehkäpä mun tosissaan pitäisi olla vähän enemmän huolissaan, ehkä ei.
