You can have various opinions about the whole Australia day and the way it's currently celebrated. Surely a nation needs a day of uniting everyone and celebrating the path it has already walked and the future it hopes to achieve, but Australia day's current form might not be the best way to do it. 

Australia päivästä ja sen tämän hetkisestä juhlistamisesta voi olla montaa mieltä. Kansakunta varmasti tarvitsee kaikkia yhdistävän päivän, jolla juhlistetaan jo kuljettua taivalta ja toivottua tulevaisuutta, mutta Australia päivän nykyinen muoto ei välttämättä ole se paras.

As (hopefully) most of you are more educated than I was before I came to Australia and know the horrible things the Aboriginals faced in the history of Australia. I knew that Europeans have been more than cruel in most of the places we headed to back in the day (take a look at the colonies in Africa, or the situation of black people in America until late last century but also in nowadays world. And I won't even pull the Trump card out here.) but I didn't know how long it took to give back the human rights the whites stole from Aboriginals when they first came here.

Useat teistä (toivon mukaan) lienevät sivistyneempiä kuin minä ennen Australiaan tuloani ja tietävät kamaluuksista, joita aboriginaalit Australian historiassa ovat kohdanneet. Tiesin, että eurooppalaiset ovat olleet varsin julmia suurimassa osassa paikoista, joihin aikanaan suuntasimme (katsokaa nyt vaikka Afrikan siirtomaa-aikoja, tai tummaihoisten tilannetta Amerikassa viime vuosisadan lopulle asti ja oikeastaan vielä nykypäivänäkin. Enkä edes vedä Trump-korttia tähän tällä kertaa.), mutta en tiennyt kuinka pitkään aboriginaaleilla kesti saada takaisin ihmisoikeutensa, jotka valkoiset heiltä aikanaan varastivat.

For that very reason "the great day of discovering Australia" was a day worth of celebrating for the European colonists but a day that started all the injustice for the Aboriginal people who already lived on this continent. That's why Australia Day in it's current form raises justifiable discussion.

Juurikin tästä syystä koko huikea "Australian löytämisen hetki" oli eurooppalaisille siirtolaisille juhlistamisen arvoinen, mutta toisaalta kaiken epäoikeudenmukaisuuden alku aboriginaaleille, jotka jo tällä maanosalla elivät. Siksi Australia Päivä herättää perustellusti keskustelua nykyisessä muodossaan.

But anyway, this post wasn't supposed to be a post about my political opinion (that I don't really even have) but a post about my very first Australia day. We drove up to Perth with a friend of mine and were supposed to go and enjoy the celebrations on the foreshore of Swan River. Unfortunately for everyone Skyworks were cancelled because of a plane crash taking place. Fortunate for us we didn't see the accident even though we were in the area and no matter how disappointed we were because of the cancellation of the fireworks I won't complain. At least we got to go home from Straya day celebrations - the two people on the plane didn't.

Tämän postauksen ei kummiskaan ollut tarkoitus olla selitys poliittisesta näkökannastani (jota minulla ei oikeastaan edes ole), vaan postaus elämäni ensimmäisestä Australia Päivästä. Ajettiin Perthiin ystäväni kanssa tarkoituksena nauttia illan ohjelmasta joen rannalta käsin. Kaikkien kannalta valitettavasti juhlallisuudet peruttiin ohjelmistoon kuuluneen lentokoneen pudottua jokeen. Onneksemme ei nähty tapaturmaa, vaikka alueella oltiinkin ja vaikka ilotulitusten peruminen aiheutti pettymyksen tunteen, en valita. Ainakin päästiin juhlista takaisin kotiin - ne lentokoneessa olleet kaksi ihmistä eivät.

So, we ended up spending our evening in a relaxed house party playing pool and chatting, and even though I didn't know most of the people there it was pretty nice. Friday we started by swimming in the swimming pool of the hostel we we're staying in (and I can tell you you're ready to start singing Hallelujah when you see a pool in the 40 degree heat) and headed to Rockingham and Penguin Island afterwords - I'll write about them later on.

Päädyttiin siis viettämään ilta rennoissa "kotibileissä" biljardia pelaten ja ihmisten kanssa jutustellen, vaikka suurin osa paikalla olleista olikin mulle ennestään vieraita. Perjantai aloitettiin aamu-uinnilla hostellin uima-altaalla (ja voin vannoa, että jokainen on valmis laulamaan hallelujaa nähdessään uima-altaan siinä 40 asteen helteessä) ja suunnattiin Rockinghamiin ja Penguin Islandille myöhemmin - niistä kertoilen lisää erikseen.

But all in all, Australia Day wasn't exactly what I expected but I guess this all just means I have to come and celebrate it some other time in the future. Australia has become an important place for me and I love it for it's diverse beauty. I could easily imagine staying here forever if it wasn't so bloody far away from everything!

Kaiken kaikkiaan Australia Päivä ei ollut ihan mitä odotin, mutta ehkäpä se tarkoittaa vain sitä, että mun täytyy vielä joskus tulevaisuudessa tulla juhlimaan sitä uudestaan. Australiasta on tullut minulle tärkeä paikka ja rakastan sitä sen kaikessa monimuotoisuudessa. Voisin helposti kuvitella pysyväni täällä ikuisuuden, jos se ei vaan olisi niin himskatin kaukana kaikesta!
