Tate Modern, London

Me and my friends just spent a week in London and I already shared some of the best moments here but I also wanted to highlight one of the places we visited: Tate Modern. The day started off lateish, we got a train to London Bridge station, walked through Borough markets, and headed towards Tate Modern while enjoying the views from the south bank. It was Monday morning and even though London is never quiet, the masses of tourists weren't nearly as bad as they could have been.

We got to our destination, walked in as the admission to Tate Modern is free, and headed straight to the top floor. The building doesn't look that tall at all when you're on the ground, as it only stretches to ten floors, but when you're up there, the views are stunning. The Shard, St. Paul's Cathedral, even Guildhall where the conference I was working in a few weeks ago was held, were all in sight from the top floor's balconies.

The Shard, St. Paulin katedraali, sekä Guildhall, jossa pidettiin konferenssi, jossa olin muutama viikko sitten töissä, olivat kaikki nähtävissä ylimmän kerroksen parvekkeilta.
The day was sunny and beautiful, and we spent a good while trying to get good profile photos for some of us. I had never been to Tate Modern before and I definitely didn't know it's possible to go and admire London from up above for free. Definitely recommend it for that purpose even if you're not interested in modern and contemporary art that is the main purpose of Tate.

Having seen enough, we started heading down the stairs to the galleries. Tate modern is not the most amazing art gallery I've been to (MONA in Hobart, Australia, is probably my all time favourite) but it was entertaining and fun, and I would say anyone who likes modern art will enjoy it. There's something to see for everyone: some of the works are just stunning, some of them are disturbing, and some of them just leave you thinking "what the heck". I like old, more traditional art as well, but often find it less stimulating and after a while I get bored to look at paintings after paintings. Modern art surprises you.

So all in all, a visit to Tate Modern is something one should consider on their trip to London. It took me nine years and multiple visits before I finally went there, and it was totally worth it. And after a visit to the gallery there's nothing better than sitting on the lawn in front of it, looking over the Thames, and then walking to Borough markets and picking yourself a late lunch from one of the numerous market stalls that bring you a colourful mixture of foods that each smell and look better than the last one.

Kaiken kaikkiaan siis Tate Modern on pysähdyksen arvoinen paikka Lontoon reissulla.
Have you ever been to Tate Modern?
Oletko sinä koskaan käynyt Tate Modernissa?

Lost in London

I'm currently in my cousin's place in Surrey, sorting out my things and mentally preparing myself for the early wake up I'm about to face tomorrow. I'm going to be working as an assistant in a conference again and even though I'm excited about it, waking up at 4am to get to London in time doesn't sound too tempting. Especially after a week long holiday including later and later nights, and later and later mornings with my friends in this very same city.

One of my good friends lives in the outskirts of London (or his parents live there, he lives in Edinburgh), and me and my two other friends flew down here about a week ago. We all booked our flights separately but coordinated to arrive at Gatwick around the same time. Somehow me and one of them ended up on the same flight, sitting next to each other - what are the chances? Anyway. We all got picked up from the airport, drove to his place, and just chilled for the rest of the night with a couple of beers and good choons.

Next few days included a visit to London: saw the queen and Charles driving to Buckingham Palace just by coincidence, walked Oxford street and tried to do some shopping with no success, and rented city bikes to drive around Hyde park after chucking the disc in the sun.

Seuraavat pari päivää sisälsivät visiitin Lontooseen: nähtiin kuka muukaan, kuin itse kuningatar Charlesin kera ajamassa Buckinghamin palatsiin ihan sattumalta, käveltiin Oxford street läpi ja yritettiin shoppailla ilman onnistumista, sekä vuokrattiin kaupunkipyörät ja ajettiin Hyde parkia ympäri, kun oltiin ensin nakeltu frisbeetä auringon paistaessa kirkkaalta taivaalta.
Camping in the woods on Saturday night with a group of some ten people - us four, some Londoners, and another friend from uni who's originally from England. BBQ, setting up tents, music, games, laughing, fun times. Putting up the trampoline the next day and jumping to the paddling pool. Playing a bit of frisbee and bruising my legs and almost breaking my toe (it's still black and slightly swollen, but seems to be fine otherwise).

Going to the city centre again, visiting Tate Modern (of which I'll write a bit more later on) and Camden Town. Going to the movies the next day, Deadpool 2 is definitely an entertaining movie that I'd recommend even though it doesn't necessarily reach the bar the first Deadpool movie set. Running for the bus like there wouldn't be another one coming in ten minutes time. Train to Victoria, tube to Fulham, and an ultimate frisbee pick up session with a local team. Was great to be playing again, and I wasn't nearly as bad as I thought I would be. Pints in a pub afterwards as you do in England, and getting back home at 1am.

Wonderful, sunny days, temperatures of at least +20 degrees most of the time. Many good laughs, debates over most random things, learning how to play Call of Duty (as apparently I'm one of the guys now and that's what guys do), and someone trying to prank me to jump out of the train on the wrong stop because "lost in London" would make a great title and a story for my blog. Didn't quite work out but I took the rights to use the title anyway.

Lost in London and lost in the feeling. Summer is here, I've got great friends and living with them will be good craic. And I think I'll never get bored of this city of businessmen and women, dodgy alleyways, and streets filled with tourists. But I guess it's how they say: when a man is tired of London, he's tired of life.

Hukassa Lontoossa ja hukassa tunteessa. Kesä on täällä, minulla on huippuja ystäviä, joiden kanssa asuminen tulee olemaan hauskaa. Ja luulempa, etten koskaan kyllästy tähän bisnesmiesten ja -naisten, epämääräisten kujien, ja turistien täyttämien katujen kaupunkiin. Ehkä asian laita on niinkuin sanotaan: kun mies on kyllästynyt Lontooseen, on hän kyllästynyt elämään.

London is always a good idea

6:30am and I wake up when the bus stops at Heathrow airport to drop off a passenger. 7am and we're at Victoria station, I treat myself to a chocolate frappe from Pret A Manger and wander towards the Westminster, then over the river Thames and to London Eye.

I can't claim the city is just waking up as it's already buzzing alive, people rushing to work and going for their morning runs. But something is missing and it's all the tourists. I've never been to London this time of a year and I've never been to London this early in the morning but I absolutely love it. The streets are empty on London's scale and it's somewhat peaceful. The queues to all the tourist attractions are missing, only one souvenir shop is open, and I'm the only one stopping on Westminster Bridge to take those generic London photos. And spring (or feels more like summer with +20 degrees) is definitely here.

I sit down in Jubilee gardens, I had this spot in mind beforehand and wanted to save my breakfast sandwich until there. It's been travelling with me the whole night and it's too warm but it doesn't matter. A night bus from Edinburgh to London takes 9 hours, costs £35 return, and isn't anywhere near as bad as I feared. I actually slept fairly well. A pair of gooses flies over, London Eye is getting cleaned before the masses come, and the sky is glimmering bright blue. My leather jacket is way too warm and the concrete I'm sitting on is slightly too cold but I don't care.

Nukuin oikeastaan ihan hyvin. Pari hanhea lentää yli, London Eye'a siivotaan ennen massojen saapumista ja taivas kimaltaa sinisenään. Nahkatakkini on ihan liian lämmin, betoni, jolla istun on vähän liian kylmä, mutta en välitä kummastakaan.
I fell in love with London when I first came here when I was twelve and I still love it. This city has a vibe like no other and regardless of me definitely having my inner city girl that enjoys most of the big cities I've been to, there's no other like London. I love Edinburgh but it's more like a town. I loved Perth in Australia, but it's not London. London is my first love, and my passion to see the world started with England. I'm forever grateful for my parents letting me go and visit my cousin with my aunt back then - I have been travelling every single year ever since, I've experienced some pretty awesome things. And I've returned to England seven times after that.

I finish my breakfast, head to Waterloo. Climb up the stairs, ask for a single ticket and get the train heading southwest. I read the free newspaper I grabbed with me, exchange a couple of words with a lady who's got an accent I can't place anywhere. I hop out in Woking, find my taxi after a while and talk about studying, languages, Edinburgh and badminton with the loveliest taxi driver ever during that short 10 minutes drive. The weather in south is absolutely amazing. It's sunny and warm, I sit outside chatting with my auntie for hours. Going back inside I realize I'm turning slightly red - lucky enough that red turns into the first tan lines of the year by the end of the day.

Another morning in London, I wake up in a hotel 4:30am, make my way to Guildhall by 6:30. Grab a coffee and a sandwich on the way, look smart in my suit, and feel like I've accomplished something in my life. One of my dreams for a long long time has been to be one of those people rushing to work while sipping their coffee in this specific city. To be fair I wasn't rushing as I particularly wanted to have that time to get that cup of coffee and enjoy my little walk, but still. I had an amazing opportunity to work as an assistant in a big finance conference last week - getting that work experience, realizing I actually enjoyed it, meeting new people, and listening to some of the panels (as surprisingly enough I find finance interesting) was fun but exhausting.

Wrapping up, having a couple of glasses of wine in the end of last day, and heading back to my cousin's place. Relaxing there for the next couple of days, enjoying the sunny weather. Some of the trees where turning all pink with the blossoming flowers, the backyard was all green. Back to London in the evening, wandering around until it gets dark. Sitting by the Buckingham Palace and heading back home. Watching the beautiful Scottish country side passing by the next morning. I had missed England. I had missed London. But it's good to be back in Edinburgh as well.

Konfferenssin purkaminen, pari lasia viiniä vikan päivän lopuksi ja takaisin serkkuni luokse. Pari päivää ihan vaan rentoutumista heidän luonaan ja keleistä nauttimista. Osa puista hehkui vaaleanpunaisina kukkien ollessa parhaimmillaan, takapiha oli ihanan vehreä. Takaisin Lontooseen illalla, ympäriinsä seikkailua pimeään asti. Buckinghamin palatsin luona istuskelua ja suunta kohti kotia. Katselen Skotlannin kauniin maaseudun vilistävän ohi seuraavana aamuna. Minulla oli ikävä Englantia. Minulla oli ikävä Lontoota. Mutta on myös hyvä olla takaisin Edinburghissa.
P.s. I started this post a couple of weeks ago when I got to England, and finished it during last week and this week back in Scotland. Took me ages to translate it into Finnish and polish it off, but here we finally go. Hope you've enjoying past couple of weeks as much as I have!

St Katharine Docks

One of the places I really like in London is St Katharine Docks. It's an area close to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. It's in the very centre of the city, but it's so quiet and peaceful you wouldn't think you're in the capital. My favourite pub in London I wrote about locates there.

Yksi paikka, josta Lontoossa todella pidän, on St Katharine Docks. Lempparipubini Lontoossa, josta kirjoitin teille, sijaitsee siellä.
St Katharine Docks has many nice restaurants, cafes, and pubs you can go and sit in. I've eaten once in an Italian restaurant there and it was an absolutely lovely place to have your lunch. I really recommend you to take a look, if you're looking for a little break of the bustle. Eating or drinking in London is always expensive, and this area doesn't make a difference, but it still could be worth it!

And as you can see from the map above, it's not too hard to find if you take a tube from e.g. Waterloo to Tower Hill!

Greenwich

Usually, when you go to London, you stick on the crowded tourist area around all the sight seeings such as London Eye, The Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace. I've done that a few times, as when you have someone with you who has never been to London that's what you wanna do. You have to see all the well known places. But when you've visited there several times, you want to see something else as well. Last summer we walked over 10km to check out all the important "London-must-sees", but also to catch a glimpse of the feeling of all the small corners and streets and parks. This time we headed to Greenwich after walking along the River Thames.

Lontoossa käydessä on helppo juuttua kiertämään tungokseen asti täytettyjä turistialueita London Eyen, Tower of Londonin ja Buckinghamin palatsin ympäristössä.
And Greenwich really is a lovely part of London. It's quite far away from the main tourist areas, but you can still see the London Eye. The River Thames is still close, and there's this old ship called Cutty Sark to check out! It has a different kind of feeling than the other areas I've visited in London, I think the city has many personalities. And you can take a walk under the river through the tunnel!

So all in all, I liked the area. And it's pronounced /ɡrɛnɪdʒ/ not /ɡɹiːnhwɪt͡ʃ/ if that makes sense! So it's not "green which", but "grenidz" :D

The Dickens Inn - my favourite pub in London

I have to admit I haven't been in too many pubs in London, as it's just so expensive to eat or drink in the capital. However I've been in a few, and in one specific pub I've visited quite a few times. It's called The Dickens Inn, and it locates in St Katharine Docks, right next to Tower Bridge. The pub itself is an old and lovely building, with pleasant staff, and they have enough variety in their menus.

But the reason why I love it so much, is the feeling I get there. It's in the very heart of London, but it's a quiet and lovely place. It doesn't feel like you're in a city of over 8 million people. It's usually not as crowded as many of the places closer to sightseeings such as London Eye or Big Ben, but it's more like a place where the locals come.

If you ever happen to be in London, in the area around The Tower of London and Tower Bridge, go there and have a drink. I recommend!

Voin suositella!

London - sightseeing by foot.

It's time to take at least one more look back to England. Back to London. The city that I absolutely love. The city, that makes me smile everytime. The city that's stunning in the night, seen from the sky. The city that never sleeps, the city that holds millions of people every single day. And the city where it's so easy to get lost in the moment.
I've visited London several times but it doesn't stop amazing me again and again. It is huge, but it has always felt somehow familiar and comfy. It has the feeling of a smaller town, if you just happen to find the correct places. It has worldwide-known buildings, there's certainly everything for a tourist. And if you wish, you can spend a whole day sitting in a park (by which London is filled), watching people passing by and feeling like a real londoner with your soda and crisps.
But anyway - here comes a travelogue from one Friday from the beginning of June. We we're actually planning to find a certain destination to visit, something totally new and unseen. But we eneded up with no real plan, with just return tickets and so with no access to the public transportation. And it was actually quite nice!
We started from the Waterloo, walked by the London Eye and Big Ben. Headed to Buckingham Palace through St. James's Park (and even though I've seen Buckingham Palace a few times, this was a totally new direction for me to arrive there).
From the Palace we headed to Green Park - a park that I can recomment to you. In the real center of everything, but still quite nice place! We sat there, ate and drank a bit and continued our journey through Piccadilly Circus (from where Leicester Square isn't too far away if you wish to see it too) all the way to Covent Garden.
After wandering a while around Covent Garden (and searching toilet with no success), we walked to St. Paul's Cathedral and kept our second snackbreak. And searched  toilets again. For some reason it seems that there are no public toilets in London even though the maps are telling a different story... So we ended up buying something proper to eat from Pret A Manger (again something that I can recomment!) and using their toilets.
From there we headed through City of London to Millenium Bridge and the other side of Thames. For a while we wondered wheter to walk to Tower Bridge, but the clock and our feet decided that it's enough walking for this time and we wandered back to the main railway station by the river Thames. Total of about 10 km travelled by foot.
And it was worth of walking! If you wish to catch a small piece of the spirit of London, walking is a best way to do it. The atmosphere is something that you have to feel. And to tell the truth - quite often it's quicker to walk a way between two busstops or undergrounds.
So if you have good shoes, a whole day, something to eat and nothing to do - just walk around. It's free, it's simple and you won't regret the day you spent in London!

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.

ps. This post might look like it's a bit overhyped - someone desperately fallen in love talking about the good sides only. But I am. London is the place to be for me, England is where (at least part of) my heart belongs ♥

pps. I really am sorry that the posts are running really late. I've just have had so much to do (and I have so much to talk about once I have a bit more time!) and the slow internetconnection isn't helping too much. When it takes two or three hours to upload the pics for a one single post, you don't really feel like posting anything...

Which destination has made an indelible impression on you? Is there that one place you want to see again and again, that takes your breath away?
