Throwback Thursday: Brussels

When I was in Luxembourg back in June I spent one weekend in Brussels. I went there by train (about 4 hours from Lux to Brussels) and stayed there one night. My hotel (Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre) was located in the very centre of the city, in a street called Rue du Midi. I'd say the hotel is a good one for a short stay, but I wouldn't stay there for more than a couple of nights - just because the breakfast was quite dull and the wifi didn't work in my room, otherwise I can't complain.

Luxemburgissa vietetyn kesäkuun aikana kävin yhden viikonlopun Brysselissä. Hyppäsin Luxissa junaan ja neljän tunnin päästä olin perillä, jossa vietin yhden yön. Hotellini (Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre) sijaitsi aivan keskellä kaupunkia, Rue du Midi nimisellä kadulla.
Brussels is a beautiful city and there's lots of Gothic architecture and many museums to visit. I visited Fine Arts Museum which contains four separate areas of which I checked out The Oldmasters and The Modern arts. And it cost about 2€! The main park in the centre wasn't too amazing (if you're looking for lovely parks go to London or Munich), but the overall feeling of the city was something I liked. Somehow really international but not too hectic, even though the situation EU was and is a one big mess and Brussels is one of the main European cities.

Brysseli on kaunis kaupunki, josta löytyy paljon goottilaista arkkitehtuuria ja useita museoita vierailtavaksi. Itse vierailin Fine Arts Museossa, joka koostui neljästä erillisestä alueesta, joista itse tsekkasin Vanhat mestarit ja Nykytaiteen. Hintaakin tuli huimat 2€!
The things I now associate with Brussels are the EU flags, rainbow flags, waffles, and soldiers on the streets. Things you kind of have check out include the statue Manneken Pis (which isn't anything special really) and Grand Place (or Grote Markt) which is actually a really impressing square! I would recommend to go and see Palais de Justice, as there's a quite nice view over the city.

And what comes to churches, I'd say a Sunday morning isn't necessarily the best time to visit them. I love going to churches but I don't like disturbing the church services. However I did get in to two churches and quite liked them both, even though I didn't really have a chance to walk around taking pictures. So if you're in Brussels (on some other time than Sunday morning) go to Église Notre-Dame du Sablon and Église Notre-Dame de la Chappele.

Overall Brussels is a city that I want to visit again. It had this very European feeling I like and the very centre has lots of beautiful old buildings. It's a nice city to explore by foot and a two-day-visit is long enough to see the main things. And yeah, don't go shopping on Saturday afternoon if you don't have hours to spend and lots of patience!

The first week in Australia

I've been here one week and two days. It's been more or less trying to get used to all the new things here and I've felt so tired every evening, must be the new environment and the language. The first weekend I spent with my host family (and my bed... I slept 14 hours the first night if I didn't mention it earlier).

The first week went mainly trying to get used to the routine, getting to know the kids and the surroundings. I got my Australian bank account and I learned how to drive on the left side of the road. It's actually not as bad as I thought it would be, but it still requires more effort than in Finland. And even though I've driven mainly manual cars I just love the fact that I don't have to do that often here. It's just one more thing to think about and it doesn't make it any easier, but I survived it, too.

Besides lots of playgroups, we visited a wildlife park and that's were all the pictures are from. I can't help but love the kangaroos, so cute! Kangaroos were one of my must-see-things and now I've seen plenty of them and I'm happy.

This Saturday I drove up to the city on my own, took one wrong turn and noticed it right away, so I didn't get lost (on the way there. Coming back home was the trickier part...). I met up with another Finnish au pair who came to Bunbury by bus from a bit further away. We spent the morning having some Finnish-girl-time and since it was lovely and sunny we walked on the beach, then bought something to eat and headed to another beach. At some point it started to rain a lot and we decided to do a bit of shopping instead of getting soaking wet.

Tänä lauantaina ajoin kaupunkiin itsekseni, käännyin kerran väärästä risteyksestä ja huomasin sen, joten en eksynyt lainkaan (menomatkalla siis. Kotimatka olikin sitten kinkkisempi osuus...).
In the afternoon we met up with two other au pairs, one Swedish and one German girl - a chance to practice my language skills later on! We went for a cup of coffee and had a nice chat getting to know each other, we all are new in the area, so it was lovely to meet people who are pretty much in the same situation with me. I'm just looking forward seeing them again and start planning some epic roadtrips we were already talking about!

Iltapäivällä tavattiin kaksi muuta au pairia, ruotsalainen ja saksalainen tyttö - ehkäpä voisin harjoitella kielitaitojani myöhemmin! Käytiin kahvilla jutustelemassa ja tutustelemassa. Ollaan kaikki melko uusia alueella, joten oli tosi kiva tavata muita aikalailla samassa tilanteessa olevia. Innolla jo odottelen, että nähdään taas uudestaan ja päästään suunnittelemaan eeppisiä roadtrippejä, joista jo puhuttiin!
So that's pretty much it. Today I'm going to have a skype chat with my family and hopefully with my best friend, too. Time difference to Finland is just 5 hours and 6 hours to Germany so it's easy to handle on the weekend, but during weekdays it might be tricky to find times to actually chat, was it then by using whatsapp or skype. But we'll survive!

The first post from Australia!

I arrived to Perth on last Friday and got through the border control pretty quickly - partly because there were no people and partly because it was a lot easier than I thought. I was prepared with all my documents from driver's licence to a print of the balance of my bank accounts and I needed really none of those. I just filled in the yellow card, told what I had in my luggage, and showed my passport and I was good to go. But yeah, it might be that sometimes it's more strict than other times, I don't know. But all the horrible expectations that I had were proven false.

Now I've been trying to get used to my life here. So far everything's been great and the family seems to be lovely. I'm living in the country really, alpacas and chicken and dogs are part of the family and there are horses just on the other side of the road. Cows and sheep are not too far away either. I like it.

It's winter now so the temperatures have been something between 10 and 20 degrees during the day, so it's nice and warm when sun is shining but can get a bit chilly if it's raining or so. But the nights can get cold, it can be close to zero degrees! But yeah, it's gonna be spring soon and as a Finn I'm not really going to freeze here.

I already saw the wild kangaroos and did some bush walking on last weekend, this week we've been sorting out all the things that are kind of essential. I got an Australian number and today I went to a bank and opened up a bank account (feeling like a real adult now). Insurance for driving and buying a spare phone for my Finnish sim-card are pretty much the only things that are left on the list.

It really feels like I'm actually going to live here, not just visit, and it's awesome!
