Father's day feelings

On Sunday we celebrated the Finnish Father's day. Or I did. Or I didn't. Whichever you prefer. We had Father's day here in Australia a couple of months ago, my host kids did something little for their father and of course the little one was born a couple of days before the day - can't imagine a better present for anyone, can you?

Sunnuntaina vietettiin suomalaista isänpäivää. Tai minä vietin. Tai en viettänyt. Miten vaan sen haluaa sanoa. Täällä Australiassa isänpäivä oli jo pari kuukautta sitten, host lapset antoivat isälleen jotain pientä ja tietenkin meidän pienimmäinen syntyi pari päivää ennen isänpäivää. Ei kai kukaan voi parempaa isänpäivälahjaa kuvitellakaan?
I sent some postcards to Europe and put a Father's day card to my father in the same envelope with the postcard for my family. I thought it was hilarious - it said something like "you're lucky to have me, where would you put all your money otherwise?" Don't know if my dad found it funny but at least there was a hint of truth behind it. So I could say I kind of celebrated the Australian Father's day but on the other hand I didn't.

On Sunday I had a skype chat with my family, it was lovely and something a bit more special. I used to skype with someone every week for the first two months - with my sister, my whole family, with my auntie, my cousin, my best friends, someone. Then my sister came here and we had one chat with our aunt and that's it, I didn't think about chatting with anyone as I had her here. But now I realized I haven't been talking with my parents for a month - I send messages to my mum in whatsapp regularly, something small almost every day, but it's not same as seeing them and hearing them. I know my dad reads some of the messages, my mum tells him how I'm doing, he sees the pictures and can read my blog (hi dad!). I hear from my mum how he's doing, but we don't really send messages as SMSs are expensive. So this was special.

So you could say I kind of celebrated the Finnish Father's day. But I didn't. I wasn't there to eat the cake or give a present or even a card. Somehow it's a bit sad but I guess it's life, the life I've chosen. I will miss birthdays and Father's days and Mother's days and all the other things, even Christmas this year. But even if it's a bit weird, a bit sad maybe, it's okay. I'm happy here, they're happy there, and no distance is too far for saying I love you. And I have the best dad ever, I love you ♥

P.s. The story behind these pictures: Monday evening. The super moon that wasn't that spectacular. Good friends. German Christmas bickies. +30 degrees. What else you need in life?

P.s. Tarina kuvien takana: Maanantai-ilta. Superkuu, joka ei ollutkaan ihan niin mahtava. Hyvät ystävät. Saksalaiset joulukeksit. +30 astetta lämmintä. Mitä muuta elämässä tarvitsee?

Quokkas of Rottnest

Last time I told you about our trip to Rottnest. This time I'm just going to share a couple of photos and a piece of information stolen from wikipedia. Here you go!

Viimeksi kirjoittelin matkastamme Rottnestille.
"The quokka (/ˈkwɒkə/, Setonix brachyurus), the only member of the genus Setonix, is a small macropod about the size of a domestic cat. Like other marsupials in the macropod family (such as kangaroos and wallabies), the quokka is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal."

"Lyhythäntäkenguru eli quokka, joskus myös kääpiövallabi (Setonix brachyurus) on sukunsa Setonix ainoa laji. Se on noin kotikissan kokoinen pussieläin. Se on kasvinsyöjä ja pääasiallisesti yöeläin. Lyhythäntäkengurun toinen nimitys quokka on johdettu noongarin kielen sanasta, joka on oletettavasti ollut gwaga."
Quokkas are everywhere in Rottnest. You're not supposed to feed them, but according to their behavior they know there's always going to be someone who gives them food. You will certainly see quokkas on your trip to the island as they're quite used to people. And they're pretty special little beings - there's just a few spots in WA with a quokka population.

Quokkia on ympäri Rottnestia.
And they're adorable, aren't they?
Ja onhan ne nyt söpöjä eikö vaan?

Wonders of WA: Rottnest

Rottnest is a small island close to Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The island is a popular holiday destination along the locals but I would recommend it to anyone visiting WA. It's easily accessible by ferries that leave from four different locations: Perth City, North Fremantle, Fremantle, and Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Rottnest on pieni saari lähellä Perthiä Länsi-Australiassa.
The best way to discover the island, in my opinion, is by bike. Hiring a bike isn't too expensive and if you are relatively fit you can easily ride the whole 20km long route along the coastline. We took a bit shorter way, a bit over 10km with my sister and saw a lot. We would have had time to take the longest way, but we didn't have enough food with us.

Omasta mielestäni paras tapa tutustua saareen on pyöräileminen.
This being the case my tip for anyone is to take a lots of snacks with you. There are general store, and restaurant on the island, but they're all in the same spot. There's pretty much nothing on the way so you just have to survive with what you have. And don't forget to bring water!

It's a bit hard to say what was my favourite thing in Rottnest as the whole island was just absolutely beautiful. Its nature is quite different to the nature we have here in Southwest and it's a great feeling to be surrounded by the ocean. I imagine there would be more people on the peak season, but we got to do our trip around the island pretty much on our own. A couple of other people riding their bikes and a tour bus passing us once and that's it. It's calming.

To give you a couple of concrete tips:
Pari konkreettista vinkkiä antaakseni:

1) Hire a bike. It takes you everywhere and you can enjoy the nature more than you would in a tour bus. And it's cheap.

2) Bring lots of water and food. You'll need both.
/ Ota mukaan paljon vettä ja ruokaa. Tulet tarvitsemaan molempia.
3) Remember that the sun can burn even if it's cloudy - don't forget your sunscreen. (Says the one who told her sister "the sun is the worst around this time of the day, it burns even if it's not sunny like today" and didn't put sunscreen on and burned her arms a bit.)
4) You don't need more than a day to discover the whole island. If you want to relax and enjoy the beaches more, then maybe two or three days would be nice, but otherwise a day is all you need.
5) Bring cash. My Australian card was working, but my sister's didn't. She had the same problem on our road trip (of which I'll tell you more later on!), so it seems to be that European cards won't necessarily work in the smallest towns.
/ Ota käteistä matkaan. Minun aussipankkikortti toimi, mutta siskon kortti ei. Hänellä oli sama ongelma roadtripillämme (josta kerron lisää myöhemmin!), joten vaikuttaa siltä, että eurooppalaiset kortit eivät välttämättä pelitä pienimmissä paikoissa.
And because I had so many photos from Rottnest I decided to save a couple of them for the next time - don't miss it, it's about to be something so adorable!
