Tate Modern, London

Me and my friends just spent a week in London and I already shared some of the best moments here but I also wanted to highlight one of the places we visited: Tate Modern. The day started off lateish, we got a train to London Bridge station, walked through Borough markets, and headed towards Tate Modern while enjoying the views from the south bank. It was Monday morning and even though London is never quiet, the masses of tourists weren't nearly as bad as they could have been.

We got to our destination, walked in as the admission to Tate Modern is free, and headed straight to the top floor. The building doesn't look that tall at all when you're on the ground, as it only stretches to ten floors, but when you're up there, the views are stunning. The Shard, St. Paul's Cathedral, even Guildhall where the conference I was working in a few weeks ago was held, were all in sight from the top floor's balconies.

The Shard, St. Paulin katedraali, sekä Guildhall, jossa pidettiin konferenssi, jossa olin muutama viikko sitten töissä, olivat kaikki nähtävissä ylimmän kerroksen parvekkeilta.
The day was sunny and beautiful, and we spent a good while trying to get good profile photos for some of us. I had never been to Tate Modern before and I definitely didn't know it's possible to go and admire London from up above for free. Definitely recommend it for that purpose even if you're not interested in modern and contemporary art that is the main purpose of Tate.

Having seen enough, we started heading down the stairs to the galleries. Tate modern is not the most amazing art gallery I've been to (MONA in Hobart, Australia, is probably my all time favourite) but it was entertaining and fun, and I would say anyone who likes modern art will enjoy it. There's something to see for everyone: some of the works are just stunning, some of them are disturbing, and some of them just leave you thinking "what the heck". I like old, more traditional art as well, but often find it less stimulating and after a while I get bored to look at paintings after paintings. Modern art surprises you.

So all in all, a visit to Tate Modern is something one should consider on their trip to London. It took me nine years and multiple visits before I finally went there, and it was totally worth it. And after a visit to the gallery there's nothing better than sitting on the lawn in front of it, looking over the Thames, and then walking to Borough markets and picking yourself a late lunch from one of the numerous market stalls that bring you a colourful mixture of foods that each smell and look better than the last one.

Kaiken kaikkiaan siis Tate Modern on pysähdyksen arvoinen paikka Lontoon reissulla.
Have you ever been to Tate Modern?
Oletko sinä koskaan käynyt Tate Modernissa?

St Katharine Docks

One of the places I really like in London is St Katharine Docks. It's an area close to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. It's in the very centre of the city, but it's so quiet and peaceful you wouldn't think you're in the capital. My favourite pub in London I wrote about locates there.

Yksi paikka, josta Lontoossa todella pidän, on St Katharine Docks. Lempparipubini Lontoossa, josta kirjoitin teille, sijaitsee siellä.
St Katharine Docks has many nice restaurants, cafes, and pubs you can go and sit in. I've eaten once in an Italian restaurant there and it was an absolutely lovely place to have your lunch. I really recommend you to take a look, if you're looking for a little break of the bustle. Eating or drinking in London is always expensive, and this area doesn't make a difference, but it still could be worth it!

And as you can see from the map above, it's not too hard to find if you take a tube from e.g. Waterloo to Tower Hill!

Greenwich

Usually, when you go to London, you stick on the crowded tourist area around all the sight seeings such as London Eye, The Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace. I've done that a few times, as when you have someone with you who has never been to London that's what you wanna do. You have to see all the well known places. But when you've visited there several times, you want to see something else as well. Last summer we walked over 10km to check out all the important "London-must-sees", but also to catch a glimpse of the feeling of all the small corners and streets and parks. This time we headed to Greenwich after walking along the River Thames.

Lontoossa käydessä on helppo juuttua kiertämään tungokseen asti täytettyjä turistialueita London Eyen, Tower of Londonin ja Buckinghamin palatsin ympäristössä.
And Greenwich really is a lovely part of London. It's quite far away from the main tourist areas, but you can still see the London Eye. The River Thames is still close, and there's this old ship called Cutty Sark to check out! It has a different kind of feeling than the other areas I've visited in London, I think the city has many personalities. And you can take a walk under the river through the tunnel!

So all in all, I liked the area. And it's pronounced /ɡrɛnɪdʒ/ not /ɡɹiːnhwɪt͡ʃ/ if that makes sense! So it's not "green which", but "grenidz" :D

The Dickens Inn - my favourite pub in London

I have to admit I haven't been in too many pubs in London, as it's just so expensive to eat or drink in the capital. However I've been in a few, and in one specific pub I've visited quite a few times. It's called The Dickens Inn, and it locates in St Katharine Docks, right next to Tower Bridge. The pub itself is an old and lovely building, with pleasant staff, and they have enough variety in their menus.

But the reason why I love it so much, is the feeling I get there. It's in the very heart of London, but it's a quiet and lovely place. It doesn't feel like you're in a city of over 8 million people. It's usually not as crowded as many of the places closer to sightseeings such as London Eye or Big Ben, but it's more like a place where the locals come.

If you ever happen to be in London, in the area around The Tower of London and Tower Bridge, go there and have a drink. I recommend!

Voin suositella!

Back home from England!

Hi again! I got back to Finland on Monday - the week spent in England was as lovely as always. This time I mainly took it easy and relaxed, tried to recover from the finals. As usually, I stayed at my cousin's place, and even though I flew there alone, my aunt with her husband stayed there for three first days of my holiday, and my other aunt stayed until the very same day as I did. It was great to spend time with all of them.

Heippa jälleen! Palasin Suomeen maanantaina, ihana viikko Englanissa kului nopeasti. Tällä kertaa käytin ajan lähinnä rentoutumiseen ja ihan vaan palauttelin itseäni loppukokeiden jäljiltä. Kuten yleensäkin, oleilin serkkuni kotona, ja vaikka tällä kertaa lensinkin Englantiin yksin, oli tätini miehineen kyläilemässä siellä kolme ensimmäistä päivää, jotka minä siellä vietin. Toinen tätini taas lähti takaisin Suomeen vasta samana päivänä, kuin minäkin. Oli ihana viettää aikaa kaikkien sukulaisten kanssa!
Besides relaxing at home and enjoying the sun, I went for a walk around Woking, did lots of shopping again (now I have all I need for my graduation party!), visited a nice little village called Albury, sat in a couple of pubs, and visited London on Monday right after I arrived. I'm about to write a few London related posts, as that was the only place I carried my camera with me. All these pics are taken with my phone, which actually has a pretty good quality as well!

Kaikki nämäkin kuvat on otettu puhelimella, ihan hyvä kamera siinäkin on!
But yeah, I enjoyed my time in England. I still love the narrow roads, British accent, the weather that was luckily sunny and just perfectly warm, the old houses, small villages, London, and the overall feeling. Even Gatwick airport starts to feel like home! The next time I land on the ground of UK will most probably be in the autumn 2017. It's gonna be the eighth time I go there, and it most probably is gonna be permanent. I fell in love with England and I wish to fall in love with Scotland as well when I move there to study. But that's all about it this time.

Right now I'm pretty busy again, trying to sort out things related to next autumn, but also with packing and preparing for moving to Luxembourg. On Friday I'm flying again, and hopefully I'm not missing any of my connecting flights as I did on Monday. The plane from London to Helsinki-Vantaa was so delayed, that I missed my plane to Kajaani... I was forced to buy a new ticket and spend extra five hours in the airport. I just hope getting my money back from somewhere, as it was totally not my fault to miss the plane. But yeah, it was my first time to miss the next flight, so maybe it was something to expect as I've been travelling quite a bit!

London - sightseeing by foot.

It's time to take at least one more look back to England. Back to London. The city that I absolutely love. The city, that makes me smile everytime. The city that's stunning in the night, seen from the sky. The city that never sleeps, the city that holds millions of people every single day. And the city where it's so easy to get lost in the moment.
I've visited London several times but it doesn't stop amazing me again and again. It is huge, but it has always felt somehow familiar and comfy. It has the feeling of a smaller town, if you just happen to find the correct places. It has worldwide-known buildings, there's certainly everything for a tourist. And if you wish, you can spend a whole day sitting in a park (by which London is filled), watching people passing by and feeling like a real londoner with your soda and crisps.
But anyway - here comes a travelogue from one Friday from the beginning of June. We we're actually planning to find a certain destination to visit, something totally new and unseen. But we eneded up with no real plan, with just return tickets and so with no access to the public transportation. And it was actually quite nice!
We started from the Waterloo, walked by the London Eye and Big Ben. Headed to Buckingham Palace through St. James's Park (and even though I've seen Buckingham Palace a few times, this was a totally new direction for me to arrive there).
From the Palace we headed to Green Park - a park that I can recomment to you. In the real center of everything, but still quite nice place! We sat there, ate and drank a bit and continued our journey through Piccadilly Circus (from where Leicester Square isn't too far away if you wish to see it too) all the way to Covent Garden.
After wandering a while around Covent Garden (and searching toilet with no success), we walked to St. Paul's Cathedral and kept our second snackbreak. And searched  toilets again. For some reason it seems that there are no public toilets in London even though the maps are telling a different story... So we ended up buying something proper to eat from Pret A Manger (again something that I can recomment!) and using their toilets.
From there we headed through City of London to Millenium Bridge and the other side of Thames. For a while we wondered wheter to walk to Tower Bridge, but the clock and our feet decided that it's enough walking for this time and we wandered back to the main railway station by the river Thames. Total of about 10 km travelled by foot.
And it was worth of walking! If you wish to catch a small piece of the spirit of London, walking is a best way to do it. The atmosphere is something that you have to feel. And to tell the truth - quite often it's quicker to walk a way between two busstops or undergrounds.
So if you have good shoes, a whole day, something to eat and nothing to do - just walk around. It's free, it's simple and you won't regret the day you spent in London!

When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.

ps. This post might look like it's a bit overhyped - someone desperately fallen in love talking about the good sides only. But I am. London is the place to be for me, England is where (at least part of) my heart belongs ♥

pps. I really am sorry that the posts are running really late. I've just have had so much to do (and I have so much to talk about once I have a bit more time!) and the slow internetconnection isn't helping too much. When it takes two or three hours to upload the pics for a one single post, you don't really feel like posting anything...

Which destination has made an indelible impression on you? Is there that one place you want to see again and again, that takes your breath away?
