Destination: Uetliberg, Zürich, Switzerland

7/31/2018

As you already know, I spent a couple of days in Zürich a couple of weeks ago. As I didn't have enough money or time to go for a proper hike somewhere more rural, I decide to go for the second best option and headed towards a mountain called Uetliberg on my last day in the town. The mountain locates right next to the city, and you can make your way to the beginning of the walking paths from the town centre in half an hour - either on foot or by tram.

Kuten jo tiedättekin, vietin pari päivää Zürchissä pari viikkoa sitten. Kun rahat, eikä liiemmin aikakaan, eivät riittäneet kunnolliseen vaellukseen jossain syrjäisemmässä, päätin valita toiseksi parhaan vaihtoehdon ja suuntasin kohti vuorta nimeltään Uetliberg vikana päivänäni kaupungissa. Kyseinen vuori sijaitsee aivan kaupungin vieressä ja lenkkipolkujen alkupisteeseen pääsee keskustasta puolessa tunnissa - joko jalkaisin tai ratikalla.
I opted for walking, bought some fruit from a market stall to take with me, and soon found myself reading a map and deciding what route to take to the top. The hike was short but surely hard, I was sweating like crazy and my legs were screaming for help, but it was totally worth it.

The weather was as beautiful as ever (this summer just seems to be one of the best ones for ages, no matter where you are in Europe) and the views got better and better as I climbed. I reached the top, sat down for a bit and had my lunch.

Sää oli tosi kaunis (tämä kesä tuntuu olleen paras kesä aikoihin kelien suhteen, ihan sama missä päin Eurooppaa olet) ja maisemat paranivat askel askeleelta. Saavutin lopulta huipun, istuin alas hetkiseksi ja nautin lounaani.
Bracing myself (as I'm totally scared of heights) I decided to pay the entrance fee of two Swiss francs and climbed up to a lookout tower. It took a while to stop fearing for my dear life, standing in the top and feeling the wind messing my hair, but when I did, it was just breathtaking.

Aikani itseäni tsempattuani (sillä korkeanpaikankammoni on ihan tosi juttu) päätin maksaa kahden Sveitsin frangin hintaisen pääsymaksun maisematorniin.
The scenery opening below me, the stunning, turquoise Lake Zürich, the city next to it and the rolling mountains on the other side of it. I just stood there, enjoyed every bit, and thought of the most random thoughts. People coming in and leaving, a group of school kids giggling away and having fun. Sometimes it's good to just take some time to stop and breath, and what's a better place to do it than a place like this.

I finally decided I'd seen enough, got back to the ground level and started heading back. The forest surrounding me and giving some welcomed shade from the sun, all the other people enjoying their day, and the views slowly disappearing as I walked back down. I was happy.

Olin onnellinen.
And all in all, what more can I say? Uetliberg was absolutely spectacular. If you ever end up in Zürich and if you want to go for a hike without spending money and time travelling elsewhere, climb up here. There are loads of routes to choose from, easier and harder hikes, and it's a great place to spend a few hours.
